Default Fordomatic fluid

This may have been covered before but I'm curious to know what the best trans. fluid would be for an early (1951) Fordomatic. the trans. has recently been resealed, the mechanic is gone and I don't know what he used but it still has some drips. In the old days we used Type A but it's no longer available and for years I used Dextron II. I'm thinking that maybe the present fluid is too thin and should be changed. Anyone else have fluid experience? TIA , Barry B.

Type 'F' fluid is what I use and is what is recommended for all Ford-o-matic and
Merc-o-matic transmissions 1976 and earlier.
Most of the dripping I have had is coming from the shift shaft on the side.
It's apparent after sitting for a while and the fluid drains back from the converter.

Type F (some list it as type FA) is a very good fluid for FoMoCo applications. It is best to start with it right after an overhaul since it has some detergent type qualities to it. Type A was the first type and it was a lot like MIL-H-5606 hydraulic fluid used in aircraft. I'm sure you could still find it somewhere but type F is good stuff if it's right out of overhaul.

DEXRON III or Type F is the preferred. Original was Type A, not sure it is even made today. I have heard that the Dexron III is the preferred, but i used Type F in my 56 with no problems.

Thanks guys, I guess Type F or Dexron III will be the choice.

When installing a converter, should it be filled with fliud before the installation?

You can fill it before installation if you like a big mess when you go to stab it! Just pour in a quart or so for initial lube and let the pump fill it when you start it up.
