Default Old size Tires (50's) vs Metrics of Today

My original tire size is 7.10 15-4 according to Shop Manual.

This translates over to: P215/75 R15.

The spare tire compartment is in the rear of the wagon covered by a lift up door.

The issue is the width of the tire near the top of the sidewall, it's too wide and the tire needs to be deflated to fit. Ok and not ok.

The old tires didn't they have straight sidewalls w/o the bulge of modern tires?

Is there a work around other than buying an expensive Cooker or? It's just the spare but I'd like it to fit better.

HEY JW!

You are going to put new tires all-around including the spare?

Do you have one good bias-ply to use as the spare?

Get a space saver from 80's model Town Car/Grand Marquis/Crown vic. Check it's fitment on both front and rear but should be good.

I’ve got a compact spare out of a 90’s Aerostar. 16” rim, small tire, fit my bird and matched my rolling radius. Much smaller than stock except for diameter.

The original 675's and 710's had a 4" tread width. On my '55 Courier, I am using 710's with an older 710 spare in the spare tire well. On my '55 Fairlane sedan, I am using P205-75R15's on the front and P215-75R15's on the rear, but an old Coker 710 wide-white in the spare tire well. The P200 series tires are near twice the tread width as the OEM tires and wont fit in the spare tire spaces.
Yes, the OEM tires do have a bulge at the midsection of the tire profile, which probably makes the overall width a little less than 6 inches.
P205-75R15 = 27.1"dia x 8.1"W
P215-75R15 = 27.7"dia x 8.5"W
Oh, BTW, the reason I didn't use P215's all the way around is because it looked to me like the tire width would rub against the top ball-joint on the backside of the tire. So I went with 205's on the front.

That's the answer that I thought was coming Dave, thanks...so the metrics really aren't the same in tread width.
I just need a tire that will fit the spare tire compartment w/o deflating it to fit!!
