I have that same door handle on my '55 Courier, except mine is a door rather than a tailgate. I took mine all apart in the late '90's to lubriplate everything, including the spring. Everything was in good shape so I didn't need to replace anything.
If you need a replacement spring, take yours out and take it to the hardware store and head for the fasteners dept. It's probable that you might find a suitable replacement. As I recall, everything was easily disassembled and re-assembled without the need for any special tools, but being more than 20 years since I last messed with mine, I don't remember fine details.

That's a long Title isn't it?

Figured out the Swivel key door spring attaches to the end of the shaft. The spring mounts from the back while holding the door in place. One end of the spring is bent across the center which attaches to the shaft tits.
A small screwdriver with a groove cut in the center pushes the spring down: clockwise to remove and ccw to install. A groove in the Housing holds the other end of spring in place so the door returns to closed position.
Look at photos. Mine is missing a tooth. The replacement part needs to be rechromed. $$$
Looking closely the shafts may separate from the door. How to do this???

Jwa, as far as the missing tooth, it might be possible to muggy-weld some material up there and have a tooth ground in it using a dremel tool and abraisive disk.
Where I am at, the place where I have taken my parts for chrome plating are proficient in muggy-welding cracked or broken pot-metal pieces like this and then chrome plating them to perfection. Ask your local chrome plating shop if they can do this for you.
