Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
My question has to do with the attached photo showing the linkage connecting the FM TV Valve to the carb linkage.
My question is should the bracket pointed to by the yellow arrow be flipped around so the “L” part of the bracket points in the opposite direction toward the middle of the engine? The reason I ask is that the end of the “L” is rubbing on the vacuum hose (red arrow) and the long leg of the bracket is hitting on the pivot point of the throttle linkage bracket (blue arrow). I thought flipping it over would fix that and it was probably installed wrong when I reassembled these items after installing the engine. |

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
The L bracket looks like a homemade replacement. There appears to be too much offset. Also there are two jam nuts holding it in place. The original bracket is threaded and only uses one nut on the underside of the bracket. With the correct offset there would not be enough room for a nut above it.

Another creation by the previous owner to cause me grief.
Any idea what this part is called and where I might find one? Also do you have or can you provide a link to a picture of what it is supposed to look like? |

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
ATTACHED below is an MPC PARTS ILL. Notice it says typical of 1955/56 BIRD, so it is not a direct drawing of your 56. It only gives BASIC PN's so as the parts dude can find them in the MPC TEXT.
I can not blow-up ILL's as I once could so maybe MERCMAN can blow it up to be readable. Anything in question simply inquire using he BASIC PN(s) shown. Most all of this is still available. Yours is a stock 56 BIRD 312 with the original INTAKE, CARB and DIST? You will need a period TRANS WSM to get the geometry correct and make final adjustment (TV PRESSURE).

You might try a post over at yblocksforever. There’s a member named Carl who reponds to a lot of parts needed adds and seems to have a lot in inventory. Posts over there in classifieds come up in then”latest” column also.

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
So how does it shift when you drive it? This is a ford-o-matic transmission (two speed with the sub low when you pull the shifter down)?

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
It seems to shift very smoothly when I start out slow in town, but it shifts a little hard at higher RPMs. I figured I would try and resolve a few other issues before tackling that and just drive conservatively. I just happened to see that connection when looking at the engine and thought it didn't look right. I ordered the 7354 part in hopes it will sort it out. I'm also trying to sort out an overheating issue you probably saw on the forum.
I've got a message in to a radiator shop to see if they can help with that. |

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
The stock clevis is available from CASCO. Part # 7354 as is the kick-down rod (7A187A) if you need it.
There is a good picture of the 55/56 Accelerator linkage in the Parts Illustrated manual.

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
From looking at the catalog, this looks like the part for a manual transmission (part # 7354)? Is yours a manual? I ordered the new part that looks like your picture because it looked so close to what I had. I actually have a Fordomatic (car originally came with manual according to the build plate (early VIN)). The equivalent part # for Fordomatic appears to be part #97011-S.
There appear to be 3 versions of the rod. One for manual, one for air cooled FM and one for water cooled FM. Does anyone know if the FM rods are 1/2” and the manual rod is 7/16”? How do the two FM rods differ? I would hate to have to buy a new rod because the catalog says to inquire for cost, which is never good. I’m going to try and find someone with a T-bird at the next car show or cruise-in and see what it is supposed to look like. |

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
There is no rod for manual transmission. Automatic rod differences are determined by year of car (or year of bellcrank used). Your bellcrank is correct for 1956, which you have. The bellcrank pictured by dmsfrr is correct for 1957, the major difference being the attachment point for the kickdown clevis. He is using the correct clevis for 1955 and 1956. The correct ,one for 1957 is U shaped with a pin and cotter pin tor attaching. Rods for both would be the same length. The rods are both the same size and use 1/4 inch thread and locking nut. (common wrench size for 1/4 inch is 7/16). Your rod appears to position itself correctly, so expect it's correct. The 1955 rod is the same diameter but due to the bellcrank design is a little shorter, and also has some offset built into it. The clevis I showed is correct for your car and, going by the picture posted by KULTAZ from the CASCO catalog, so is the 7354 part number. I will look tomorrow to see if I have more than the one '55-'56 part, (I know I have extra '57s). If I do I will send you one.

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
Yes, the nut that came with part #7354 was 7/16”, so the threads would be 1/4”. My rod had a 1:2” nut on it, so #7354 would not fit.
That would be great if you have the right rod that would fit #7354. Thanks |

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
The 97011-S CLEVIS was 1957 BIRD use.
This is a conversion so it is hard to say what was used for the install. Regardless, you need the FM WSM (available on CD) to properly setup the linkages and use a pressure gauge for final adjustment. This is a throttle valve controlled trans and it will fry. Try not to drive it until the operation and pressure is verified.

Re: Throttle valve rod and linkage on 1956 Thunderbird
I'd say your rod length is about right. Smooth shift cruising along, a more aggressive shift when you are on it. That sounds correct.
