Default 1933/34 Pickup Differental

I would like info on the 1933/34 pickup rear end.

1) Are they same as a car? If so, which year(s) are the same?

2) Length (inches) of the two tapered shafts? Are replacements available? If so, which vendor?

3) Can a later years differental be use without having to change the spring? I assume the output spline would be 10 rather than 6 and requre a driveshaft adaptor

THANKS for any information.

Red, 33 and 34 rear is the same for cars and pickup. The rear spring is also the same but will only fit 33/34 due to the unique shape. The croossmember will not accept a different spring.

If you are getting to changing rear gears you can install later gears into the 33/34 casing. Will need some machining.

33 & 34 Passanger and P.U. rear end assemblies are the same.

The 33-34 axles are 32.18" O.A. with 18 teeth on the gear.

To my knowledge, axles are NOT being reproduced. Just be sure to Magniflux any used ones you are thinking of using. Often you will find them with cracks.

'35 and later differentials will require modification of the rear crossmember (or spring) for the "later" straight spring and also shortening of the torque tube and drive shaft.

Mac's lists new 3.54 gears for the 33-34 differential BUT the pinion is six spline insted of ten so the pinion end of the drive shaft would have to be modified. Not a real big deal for someone who does this kind of stuff.

The later rear ends also have a wider track so the wheels will stick out further.

I hope this helps,

Chris

Someone should have mentioned that there are two different torque tube lengths, one for the 4 cyl and one for the V8. Search the archives for the lengths. The truck usually came with a 4 cyl and the passenger cars with a V8.

It should also be noted that the REAR springs for 1932-1933-1934 are essentially interchangeable (including for the 1932 "B" rear and the 1932 "18" rear) although they will vary in the number of leaves (according to body style) and the ends of the leaves for 1934 were generally cut straight accross, while 1932-33's were generally taper-cut... no doubt with exceptions like almost everything else. These rear springs are "curved" and fit a curved rear cross-member. Cannot use a later rear with the 32-33-34 curved spring without modifying the spring hanger length and angle - it will mess up the wheelbase/rear wheel location.

The late 1932 "18" rear was carried over to 1933-34 EXCEPT that the length of
the driveshaft and torque tube was increased as per the above post. Otherwise, notice that the axle housings, center "banjo" section and radius rods AND the internal parts all carry 18- part numbers EXCEPT for the "high speed" 3.54 ring/pinion gears and maybe the 4.33's? Therefore, a 33-34 rear can be modified as to driveshaft/torque tube length to properly fit a 1932 (using the same spring as the "B" rear) with no other modifications. (It is also important that the speedometer drive cap location/orientation be changed to that of a 32...)
