Engine pans
My Model A does not have engine pans. Other than keeping the engine clean and cool will adding them cut down the engine/chassis/road noises?

Re: Engine pans
I don't know about noise abatement, but engine pans help cool the engine.

Re: Engine pans
They will not surpress engine, chassis or road noise. They will add anadditional point of ground to the electrical system.
To decrease engine and road noise you may want to insulate the interior firewall surface and floors.Sound deadening material can also be added inside the doors. |

Re: Engine pans
A plus is that if you accidentally drop a nut while working on the engine, it doesn't disappear into the gravel on the driveway!

Re: Engine pans
When I put my "new" engine in, it had a remote oil filter and a cast exhaust header on it, making it impossible to fit the right engine pan. I really wanted to put engine pans on it (the left one fit OK). I finally was able to alter the right pan so that everything fit. Looks much better now.

Re: Engine pans
After the tabs on my pans broke, I ditched them and haven't put them back since. Too much trouble.

Re: Engine pans
The engine pans are present for a reason. Money Penny Henry got rid of the shrouds … left the pans on. Why ?

Re: Engine pans
The ears tend to crack on the engine pans where they are attached with pan bolts, as seen in Carl G's photo. I install large washers that I trimmed to fit the pan rail to spread out the load. Haven't had any crack since I started installing them.

Re: Engine pans
Good idea, Y-B. I found out a long time ago that when you are bolting sheet metal to anything you have to put a large washer on the bolt or the sheet will eventually crack. Especially if it is where the sheet has vibration or movement. I think that is why they invented 'fender washers' so the fenders wouldn't crack. Plus, the slotted holes on the fender made it even weaker. Also, if you had a cork pan gasket the holes in the pan would bell out eventually and the gasket could not get tight enough to seal. I've hammered more than one pan just to flatten the holes again.
