Alternator Question
In June, TMURPH posted that his alternator was charging a constant 15 amps. A model A friend is having the same situation and just replaced his battery. He's also thinking of replacing the alternator. I value your thoughts on replacing the unit with a generator or another alternator.
We see that you can get an alternator in either 30 or 60 amps. What do y'all think. Marty |

Re: Alternator Question
30 amps is plenty for Model A. Before spending money, check ground connection between battery and frame. Bad ground connection can throw the voltage sensor off.

Re: Alternator Question
Also check the ground connection between the alternator and battery/frame/engine.

Re: Alternator Question
Check the alternator voltage with the engine running. If it’s 6.4 to 7.2 for 6 volt system or 12.8 to 14.4 for 12 volt system it’s not your alternator that’s the problem.
The amp meter shows what is going to (+ side of the meter) the battery or leaving the battery, (- side of the meter) Not the electrical load the vehicle is using. You either have a high output voltage over charging the battery, a shorted battery cell, or a partial short in the battery charge circuit. Last edited by GPierce; 08-29-2022 at 05:27 PM. |
