Default spark plug caps

Hi all, I was just looking at a Restoration Supply Co. catalog and noticed something called “spark plug caps”. I must admit I like the look of 3X and other vintage brass capped spark plugs. Anybody ever use these to dress up modern replacement plugs? What are your thoughts?
Thanks, Ian

I bought a set then realized you can make your own. It has been a while but I believe you use 1/2" copper plumbing end caps. I eye-balled what I thought was the inside center of the end cap. Marked it with a sharp punch then drilled a hole for the spark plug contact to stick through. If the hole was off center I rat tail filed it until if fit better. I use them on my W18 Champion plugs.

You can buy a set of those spark plug caps from one of the vendors and re-tap them to fit your modern plug. It's only brass, soft metal. I did this once but you will have to determine the thread size of your modern plug.

Default Fun with spark plugs.

I had some of those caps so I tried one out. It really changes the look of the plug. I had darkened the base in the past to look more aged. The screw on top came from the hardware store also.

Thanks for the tip, Bob-A.

I have thought of doing something like that. I like your execution of it. It looks sharp. I may give that a try.

Look pretty dang kool!!

Question: Do they get "energized" each time a spark travels to the plug and I must guess they do not affect the strength of spark available at the business end of the spark plug that might affect engine operation.

I'm sure they get "energized" just like a brass capped 3X Champion but should not effect the running of the engine, unless you ground them... I certainly wouldn't touch them if you have a pacemaker (I do).

Y and Bob, where did you get your caps and nuts?

I looked on restoration supply and only found the nuts.

I hate, despise, dislike and their site angers me. Why don't they do something like Snyders and make it easy to purchase from them.

Y-Blockhead, What brand of black paint did you use on the plug bases?

old31, The caps (1/2" copper pipe end caps) came from a plumbing supply store. Most all hardware stores should have them. The knurled nuts I bought from either Bratton's or Snyder's.

I used a light coating 'Black Onyx Patina for all metals'. Update: Don't use this paint. I was just polishing my copper caps with Nevr-Dull and it took this paint off!!

I can imagine any semi-gloss black would work if it could stand up to a little warmth..

Awesome. I put a ˝" drill bit in my drill press and without turning it on pressed down on the inside of the cap to mark the center. Tamp, tamp, turn tamp tamp... Then drilled it from the inside with 5/16" drill bit.

Site will not let you copy image, the cap is smaller and costs $3.50 each, does not even come with the knurled nut.
I like the way these homemade ones look better

Yes Burner. I was able to grab a picture but was hoping for something clearer on a W18? And without that funky top? They are a bit expensive.

I agree, I like the looks of the homemade ones.

Hey Y-Blockhead, on making your own caps. How did you hold the caps stable when using a drill press? I don't want to mar the outside or bend them out-of-round with a pair of pliers.

Hi, I didn't actually use my drill press to drill the hole, just to mark center with a ˝" drill bit. Sorry for the confusion.

When I drilled the hole I used a 5/16" drill bit and held the cap with my hand against my wooden work bench. The copper cap is soft and drills easily. After drilling I polished them on my bench grinder.

Hey Marty. I actually thought about that. I have a 12v Pertronix Flame Thrower coil. I started my car last night in the dark to see if there was any arcing. I did put a little di-electric grease inside the cap to prevent moisture from collecting "Just in case".

But no, I haven't had any problems, just a fun thing to do. It makes the W16/W18 plugs resemble 3X plugs.

Thanks again for sharing your idea Bob-A.

Got the 1/2 in copper caps and made me a set, buffed and drilled they look good. I found small brass accord nuts at the hareware store and look fine, had to use brass washers. Can't find a way to post photo's.

thanks for the idea,

Well, I just finished putting my Spark Plug Caps on my car and they look great. This was a fun project that only cost about six bucks. The caps and the knurled nuts all came from Lowes. When I went to Lowes and asked if they had parts for a 90 year old car they thought I was crazy. Maybe I am.

Finally got my caps drilled and installed. To find center I used a center punch after marking the middle with an X with a fine sharpie. Then I used a very small bit in my drill press to get a pilot hole, then held upside down against wood with a small rubber jawed bar clamp to drill larger 5/16" hole. A rat-tail file to smooth burrs and a little Never Dull made for some good looking caps for very little price.

They are only penny's from the suppliers. Not worth the effort to mess about. I get mine from Bert's.

Bert's sells copper plumbing parts? I see the brass knurled nuts, but that is not what is being talked about in this thread.

Lighten up, people are having a little fun with their sparklers.

Neat project! However, I'm thinking the vertical length when installed should be shortened by one-half or more. Anybody agree? If you do agree, what would be the easiest method of cutting without damaging the appearance. Copper is soft.

I did experiment with the length but decided I liked the longer one better. When you shorten it the 'ribs' on the porcelain show and IMO it looks better with the ribs covered. The 'rib' do show on the 3X plug tho. The W16Y is a lot taller than a 3X.

But have fun with it and do as you think best.

3X compaired to W18. The W18 has a slightly shortened copper cap to expose rib.

I do believe the 1/2" caps your referring to Are 3/8" caps. They are 1/2" inside diameter because they slid over the outside of a 3/8" pipe. The 1/2" would be to big for my Autolite 3076 plugs, I don't see my plugs being that much smaller in diameter if at all.
If anyone has the same autolite plugs these require a metric knurled brass nut, good luck finding them. M4 X 0.7 I had no luck finding them.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Y-Blockhead, Thanks for the image of a shortened cap. The bevel you put at the bottom and the rib showing makes the copper cap look more like it belongs on the plug. Great job!
How did you cut the cap without damaging the soft copper?

HAHA, extremely HIGH tech. I turned the copper cap upside down on a spark plug and used the brass knurled nut to hold it in place so I could use the spark plug as a handle. Then I slowly sanded it on my Harbor Freight 5" https://www.harborfreight.com/1-in-x...der-69033.html to the length I liked. I used fine disc and an even finer belt. I cut the bevel at the bottom using the same. Then polished. The caps are cheap so experiment.

Seems I have way too much time on my hands but I had fun with this little project and they came out great looking.

I'm still undecided which I like better, the short or long.

Are you somehow defeating the reason there are ribs on the porcelain by installing the caps over them?

Spark plug construction
Ribs: The ribs prevent electrical energy from leaking from the terminal to the metal case along the side of the insulator. The longer the current has to travel because of the ripples the higher the resistance thereby assisting with isolation.

Guten Abend,
the copper caps are available here with a diameter of 12 mm (<1/2 inch). That fits. Does anyone know such caps made of brass?

Good thought. Please see my post #29. I put di-electric grease in my caps to prevent moisture from getting under and the d-electric grease will also prevent any zapping to bypass the sparkler.

FYI a 3X is 11/16" from brass cap to spark plug body and the W-16Y is ⅞" from our copper cap to spark plug body.
