Default Finally a space just for the As

Most of my life I either worked in a 2 car attached garage to the house or in the gravel driveway. In 2008 when I retired I built my dream garage, a 40 X 60 with the rear half cathedral ceiling with 15' 6" clrnc in the center, fully insulated 2 - 4 post lifts, pull points in the floor, plug ins every 10', multiple welder hook-ups, big work bench, 9' high door.. dual 60 gal compressors to supply all the air I would ever need, and what I thought all the space I could use. While I was at it I built a 16' X 60 lean-to attached to the side for storage, 16'X 16" machine/engine shop closed off with entry from the garage and 44' extra parking. As you might guess after a few years things got full. On a typical day the garage houses my Miata, Explorer on the center lift at ground level, RX7 hot rod with corvette suspension and a built 302 on the other lift raised up, a mixture of grand-kids toys and other items below the RX7, wife's Ranger 4X4, Escape, '29 CCPU, '29 Coupe, '31 AA LWB and '31AA SWB, and my King Quad 4 wheeler, in the lean-to is my F150 4X4 and my New Holland 55 HP 4WD tractor. For years I have been saying I'm going to build a space just for the two '29s and all the extra engines, rear ends and other Ford Parts, and nothing else. Well this week it happened 14' X 32' lean-to onto the lean-to framed up and roofed, as soon as the concrete finishers can get here the floor will be poured. Promised the grand-kids I'll put a sign up "Grand-kids Model A garage" They are as happy about it as I am....... Next time it will be a 60 X 100!

You know. I really hate you guys (not really) that made a great career for your selves and had the foresight and discipline to make a great future. I was too busy living for the day riding hard and living hard and now I will work till the day I die. Sounds like you have a great place there. My hats off to you. I’m still working out of that attached garage and a 17x 53 ft. Covered patio. congrats.

I started assembling one of these this weekend. My pickup still goes in my heated garage, but just planning ahead for winter for the overflow. I had to put my pickup in off site rented storage this past winter and don't want that to happen again. All I could afford right now.

When I retired I also built a dream garage. Finally a place for my hobby. Not as grand as yours but big enough to store 3 antique cars and work shop. I have spent many happy hours out there. Ed

Some are very lucky. Me . . . not so much. I have no garage. I do have a kind neighbor who lets me use half of his. That means disassemble, restore the parts in my basement workshop, and the reassemble. It is amazing what you can accomplish with enough determination.

I'll try to get some PICS posted, since photobucket went away, I lost the ability to post them and haven't looked into another provider, be nice if I could just copy them from my album and paste them, like you do an email.

I've never had a problem posting photos on this site. I've never used photobucket and don't know the first thing about it.
To post photos, click on the "Go advanced" box under the quick reply section, then click on the paper clip icon which is for attachments and you're in business. Simple.

I've owned one of those canvas garages for 25 years as storage overflow. It has worked out well and I replaced the top covering about 8 years ago right over the original cover. I built a 24 x 20 p.t. floating deck and lag bolted the garage to it. I had a lot of snow one year and tucked in a couple of V notched 2x6 vertically under the ridge pipe, it stood up well. Make sure your pipes are heavy duty, mine are all 1-5/8 steel if I recall correctly.

That's not just a neighbor you have, I'd consider him a very good friend. I'd like to have a big shop to work in myself, but I consider myself fortunate to have a 2 car garage to work in. If the weather isn't bad outside, I park my other garage queen outside and cover it up. Being organized helps a lot.

I hate to be the first one to tell you this, but you didn't build it big enough.

They are never big enough.

I finally got a house with a two car garage two years ago and bought my first A. Terrific. Well, now I have 4 antique cars and three moderns. Oh, well. No space to build anything bigger and trying to figure out what to do? I have two in rented space, but what a PITA that is.

Only thing I don't like about Florida. Had my 24x36 shop with a woodstove and black dogs in RI. Now I have a rented 8x16 storage unit and NO dogs. But most of the time (today being ONE of the exceptions) beautiful sun, flat roads, and 80. I'm drooling over some of the shops!
