I've not done this, my 6v pos gnd '55 Bird was converted before I got it.
But here's a link to how it's done on those.
FYI: your newer fuel tank sending unit probably won't work with the older fuel gauge, they function in different ways. The fuel gauge will likely need to be changed to a re-pop version that matches the sender type.

Not sure exactly what you are asking. Yes originally they are 6V positive ground. If changing to 12v then don't forget horns, heater motor, starter solenoid and wiper motor. Starter can take 12v. I would take an original gas tank sending unit and modify for mustang tank as the original gauge will not work with any modern senders.

I figured the gauge is an issue I did a conversion on my 55 merc wagon but that was a few years ago

If you've still got the original sender and it works, yes, that's a good idea.

Ford used 6 volt gauges up into the 80's with the exception of 1956,if your Mustang tank came with a sender this will take care of your gauges: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281469368054...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT This also explains things well: http://www.ebay.com/gds/6-to-12-Volt...1571127/g.html

You don't need to change the horns,or the starter solenoid.Heater motor will need a voltage drop, or 12 volt motor. Wipers are vacuum, as I'm sure you already know.
