Default Re: Why Do you Back-off to Torque ?

I have always retightened my head bolts after reassembly in the 35-45-55 sequence, and again to 55 after 100 and 500 miles, without backing off the nuts. I have never had any adverse effects from this procedure, in over 55 years of working on A's.

That is not to say I would never use the backoff method, though. I'm open to trying new or different methods with solid advice from knowledgeable people.

I currently have a rebuilt engine ready to install. So I am going to use the backoff method this time.

PS: As side note, the first time I took my A apart, back in 1961 at the tender age of 16, I put it back together without a torque wrench and without any knowledge of the proper sequence for tightening head bolts. I drove it that way for 19 years with no negative consequences.
