Re: How to Install Fan Belt
Interesting the front of the engine lines up but the belt wont fit is the space provided. Yea, you have to lift the engine by loosening things up as mentioned.

Re: How to Install Fan Belt
Bought a new B42 gates belt today. Napa couldn't match up the numbers of the one I had.
The new belt is the same length and width...not quite as thick since it's new and the old one was worn/frayed some. Once the weather gets warmer, I'll push out the car and work on it. I'll clean under the engine pulley area first as it was dirty. Then I'll try the install using the methods suggested and let you know. I had another suggestion to use the engine crank to lift the engine some. I.E. put it in the engine pulley and push down and have the engine end lift up (see-saw). Marc |

Re: How to Install Fan Belt
When I have to get the fan belt off I remove the generator pulley and that makes it easy for me.

The doors to my storage shed are blocked with about 6 inches of frozen snow. As soon as I can get them open, I will provide the info on the fan belt I use on my A's. Regards, Bill Lee/Virginia Peninsula |

Re: How to Install Fan Belt
Marc, I've always used a Gates 749 belt (TR22434) is the new number. Every since I put the Alt on I've used this belt.

Re: How to Install Fan Belt
Since the generator has the least belt contact, the belt should go over the crank and water pump first, then finish with the generator. As mentioned, the new aluminum fan isn't quite as wide as the stock steel hub, so the belt rides a little higher on the fan. A belt 1" long might be needed.

Re: How to Install Fan Belt
Chuck Norris could theater the belt and it would install itself.

Re: How to Install Fan Belt
I wonder if you could HEAT the belt to encourage stretching?
