Rods should be straight.

Make sure that the brake arms are correct. The arms clevis holes are canted slightly to allow the rod clevis and rod to be straight. My Tudor had odd feeling brakes, until I found the the arms were mounted on the wrong side so the clevis pin canted the wrong way. The rods were also bent at the rear end so they would fit in the arm clevis. This lead me to go over my brakes completely front and rear.

I had a similar problem to Dave in Australia - but one side only. The brake actuating arm on the back is "sided". my car at "right" side arms on both sides. This required the left side brake rod to be bent in order to attach it to the arm. I had to replace the actuating arm with the correct one and straighten the rod.
