Bad New Year Start

It was 82 degrees on New Years Day in the Burton, Texas area and the forecast was for freezing temperatures the next morning. My wife suggested that we take an afternoon drive in one of our old Fords. I started up our ’28 roadster and we went for a drive. Returning home, the engine started shutting down and restarting. Whenever it stalled, I waited a while, but it would continue to act the same way. I managed to get it home and I drained the carburetor bowl assuming that some water had accumulated in the gas tank. Then I drove it to my barn where it stalled right at the entrance door. Now I believe that the problem is a clogged filter.

I decided to push the car into the barn and fix it later. Big mistake, I managed to rupture the Achilles tendon in my right foot. My wife drove me to the hospital in Brenham Texas. The ER was crammed full of people, but they kept me next to a wall and did several X-rays and a CT scan on my foot. They said that I needed an MRI, but they don’t have one there. They gave me some pain killers, wrapped my foot, and put a brace on it. We drove to Houston where most of our doctors are, and I hope to get more help soon.

Wow, some bad luck there, sorry to hear that. Let's hope it all works out for the better. Oh, please be careful in the hospital, ... they are the house of Covid.

And in Denver, a whole town got burned, some 600-1000 homes. Don't know an exact number yet. Now we have to wait for the snow to melt.

Sorry for your bad luck on the Achilles. I have tendinitis in mine which will go away if I let it rest enough but I'm so busy.�� I do know it is painful and mine isn't ruptured. Make sure you get a quality doctor instead of a parts changer as they are too busy trying to appease the insurance companies to spend much time with the patient nowadays. Also before anything happens ask how much if you pay cash. Even if you have health insurance you can sometimes pay more than if you paid cash just for your portion and deductible. I know, it doesn't make sense. I needed a c-pap mask and with insurance my part was 260ish and without insurance it was less than $100.00. We should all cancel our health insurance and get out of (their) game.

For future reference, I will sometimes us a 2 X 4 to move a car. I brace the end on the ground with my foot and push on the bumper. A 6 foot lever gives me about a 5 to 1 advantage.

Hope one of you can open the collant (water) drain petcock. A mess is easier to deal with than a busted block.

Get well soon! The 2x4 trick above I would still probably get hurt, just to move my A a few feet I have with a strong battery used the starter motor ignition off of course putting it in low or reverse gear.

Wow! I hope your bad start turns into a great beginning! The symptoms you mention fit a clogged gas tank vent. The next time the engine stalls, slowly loosen the gas cap and listen for a hiss of air flow into the tank. Good luck.

I finally got to see a doctor this morning. He felt my ankle and calf and said that I had a ruptured Achilles tendon and that I didn’t need an MRI as there was no doubt about it. He said that surgery was possible, but he didn’t recommend it for me. He showed me a special boot that I need to purchase and wear all the time for 3 months except when sleeping. He said that it should heal in that time. I also have an appointment with him to return in 4 weeks so he can monitor my progress.

Thanks for your concerns and encouragement. Getting old is hard.
