Re: 49 F1 shift pattern
Using the H pattern above, shift to the R position with the clutch pedal depressed and the motor running, ease out on the clutch and if the car goes
forward you have a 4 speed transmission, and if it goes backwards you have a three speed transmission.

Should it have the reverse lockout lever if its a 4 speed? Earlier years had them but not positive on a '49 F1.

Re: 49 F1 shift pattern
I don't recall a lockout on the Bonus Built trucks.

Re: 49 F1 shift pattern
If memory serves me, with the stick in the neutral position, pull it to the left and it would
stop, then pull it further left and then up for reverse. (4 speed).

Re: 49 F1 shift pattern
The T8/T9 4-speed transmissions were optional for a 1/2 ton but it's not common to find them factory installed. They are common to the F2 & F3 pickups. The 4-speed made in the US have a separate half bell or hogs head clutch housing that bolts on and they are a fair bit larger than the light duty 3-speed. Canadian made 4-speeds may a different story. I've seen those with an integral half bell in photos but the transmission is big in any case.
There was also a heavy duty 3-speed that is fully synchronized but they are not common and they are larger than the light duty 3-speed. It just depends on what year F1 we are wondering about here. Correction on the sychro 3-speed. The 4-speed T98 was the fully synchronised 4-speed but it is getting harder to find one for the Bonus trucks. Last edited by rotorwrench; 08-16-2021 at 06:53 PM. |

I've been surprised how many F-1's came with the crashbox 4-sp, especially common in the ones with a 226 6-cyl.

Re: 49 F1 shift pattern
According To the green parts book 1942 was the last year for the reverse lockout.

Re: 49 F1 shift pattern
For the 4 speed spur gear, reverse is to the drinkers side and back to the seat. For the synchronized T98, not available in the pickups, reverse was to the drinkers side and up to dash.
