Tom may very well have the source of the noise pinned down. Mine did the same in 1st and 2nd and was quiet in 3rd. When I pulled it apart that bearing was toast. Replaced it and the shaft and all is quiet now. I would suggest replacing all of the bearings if you tear it down.
