Paint or Powder Coat?

Should I spend the money powder coating my '28 Sport Coupe's wheels? The wheels currently look good painted, but I understand the durability of the powder coat is far better. Your thoughts?

But don't expect to tough them up very easily. At least that has been my experience. Also, I've seen the lugs snap powder coat....paint too!

Powder painted 15 years ago and still look good. Same goes for the hairpins. Powder paint is your friend!

Excellent point.

Putting some grease on the lug nuts where they contact the wheel before putting them on will solve that. And, don't exceed the recommended torque.

I've seen some beautiful powder coated wheels and they are tough, but when the time comes, I'm going to spray paint mine.

I powder coated mine and then bought the stainless washers to protect the wheel from the lug nuts. Would do it again.

I painted mine, put nickels in the lug holes prior to priming and painting they came out great!

Im going to powder coat mine since I just found a shop that does it for a very low price compared to most.

Powder Coat, but if u do what ever the wheels look like, if pitted will show, so if the wheels are smooth when u powder coat they will look good. Don't know if they can smooth out any wheels before they powder coat, but when I had mine done they were really nice wheels. Don"t forget to use the stainless steel washers for the lugs, will keep them from chipping. Very Durable, as far as im concerned its the only way to go!!

You wont regret the Powder coat. Just ask a lot of questions at the shop. When you walk away with your wheels left behind, be confident they know how to prep. The quality of the job is all prep. Proper prep is the most expensive and labor consuming part of the job. Laying the powder is easy.

watch that pc shop does not build up particularly at joints of spokes with rims and hubs...it is not authentic and it looks awful.

Painting is, I believe, Best.

I can assure you that there was no powder coating in the late 1920s, so unless you are building a rod, you should stick with what was used when your car was built. I personally don't even use powder coat on motorcycle frames, as any chip can allow humidity to crawl underneath and create havoc.

Any chip will allow any coating to fail. Prep is the key. Here is a link to a Feb post where this was discussed.

If you have pits, powder coat will work over J B Weld. Full the pits, file smooth, then coat. I powder coat my entire chassis and its bullet proof

Yes JB Weld is awesone stuff, I once filled a cracked head with it. Ran it 10 Thousand miles, sold it to a fellow who ran it another 10. However, PC requires conductivity to work, and JB Weld is not any more conductive than Bondo. You also need to be sure not to trap air bubbles, as the powdered part will be heated. Arlen's sucess was dependent upon the thickness of the JB Weld. There are conductive Epoxy substrate coatings that work better. Pick your Powder Coater before you do your fill work and use what he recomends.

I debated with myself about entering this fray, finally succumbed! I wanted to powder coat my wheels in the worst way, for a while. A friend who is familiar with paints and coatings warned me away from it. He pointed out the rust and decay on his son's late model International truck. This truck is not housed, it's out in the weather. The PC was a shell where the metal used to be. Another example would be to go to the local marina and seeing the rust damage to the boat trailers that have been PCed. PC Looks great! No doubt about it! It does seem to be more resistant to pebbles. But moisture is sneaky. You don't see it happening until the metal is gone. If you keep your car in a garage and out of the weather, go for it. If will get wet, even occasionally, I would go with paint. No I don't hate Powder Coating!

There are two kinds of powder coating: Excellent and Crappy. I must be lucky as my PC jobs on cars, boat trailer and marine accessories still look great after 15 years. And, you get exactly what you pay for.

Paint them. No reason to do otherwise. If you have the painter put a flex additive to the paint, it will be much more durable.
