35-40 Chassis Part ID
Greetings,
I have 2 chassis worth of parts for my 36 that I'm building. I tried searching on here, the HAMB, and the internet in general for a book or resource for identifing the various chassis parts and differences as well as for what items can be mixed and matched with each other. Can someone point me in the right direction for this? Thanks! |

The Green Book doesn't have what you need? Or VanPelt? This would be for ID, no idea the mixed and match source.

This figure is from VanPelt. The Green Book would give you the specific part numbers for the basic part numbers shown in the figure.

Re: 35-40 Chassis Part ID
Your best source is likely the "green bible". It is a comprehensive 780 page Ford chassis parts & accessories catalog. It covers cars '28 thru '48, and trucks '28 thru '47. Except for body parts, covered in another manual, it shows detailed drawings of all parts covered, together with numbers and notations. I've had mine since my mechanic days in the early 50's. Most vendors sell them. C&G list it as item FPS-3633,$75. It is an indispensable resource for any old Ford owned or enthusiast. I don't know of a book on interchanging parts. You can see an array of info at www.cgfordparts.com

Re: 35-40 Chassis Part ID
As JSeery said above, the Green Bible is the only realistic, comprehensive source that comes to mind for Parts ID. There is currently one for sale in the Swap Meet section here on the 'Barn.
As far as mix n' match, fire-away with your questions.......quite a few folks here with enough experience to know what will mix and what probably will not. DD |

Re: 35-40 Chassis Part ID
I have a bare but very nice 37 frame and front and rear axels from a 40. I also have a 39 frame that's junk but just a quick glance appears the axles are not 39 but from some year earlier (i.e. mechanical brakes components). What I want to do is pick the best stuff from what I have but make sure its not gonna throw off any geometry or something like that.

Re: 35-40 Chassis Part ID
'40 front and rear axle assemblies will bolt directly into a '37 chassis. Unbolt the spring U-bolts at front and rear......bolt 'em back in the '37. Only real difference is converting pedal system to actuate your more-desireable hydraulic brakes on the '40 axles. DD

I'll be running a 39 trans behind a Y block. I have a 39 pedal set on its way to go with it.

Re: 35-40 Chassis Part ID
You do realize that Y-blocks get "tight" in a '36, but that's another story. DD

Re: 35-40 Chassis Part ID
The biggest difference is the back of frame. There is 35 and early 36.
When changing frames on my 39 I used a 35 frame and had to shim in back 2" The front cross member should be the same 39 deluxe and after sit lower. |

Re: 35-40 Chassis Part ID
I know the Y block will be a tight fit. I'm wanting to set up the chassis with the Y block, transmission, and radiator all installed to check my clearances as well as figure out how to tactfully cut the firewall to make it all fit. Wish me luck!
