Default 29 instrument panel lamp

Just finished restoring the instrument cluster panel for my 29. There was no ignition switch or lamp. I installed the lamp assembly and I'm not sure what the function of the cap is. It pulls off and is twist able . I just know for a good reason but I can't find much about it on the net. Please advise

When you twist to the right and push in slightly it turns the lamp on.

Should the cap come off so easily or should I try to push it down to pop it in?

It should be a firm fit, other wise it would slip when turning the lamp on. I probably don't have a good side view of the lamp.

My lamp is 1 3/4" from the instrument panel to the top of the shield when the lamp is off.

If you've got a repro, don't expect it to work properly.

Rick, it's a pretty easy operation to remove and clean your gauge, and a new gasket and float set is only about $10. Altogether you should only have about a couple hours in the job.

There's a detente for the ON position that is reached by turning the light ~ 1/4 turn or less clockwise; if you turn it past the detente, the unit falls out in your hand--at least that's how mine works.
