Had a similar problem with a 89 F-250. I don't believe these had any gasket from the factory. Mine was severly warped and previous owned broke off manifold bolt in head. Helicoil and regular gasket lasted about six months. Retapped and surfaced manifold, seems to be holding one year later. 94,000 miles and only do heavy pulling. I think the copper gasket might still be the way to go but definitely have the manifold checked for straightness.
