Hmmmmm, shouldn't be the timing chain with that low a mileage; I agree with Robert, it could be the ignition module. Before that though, I would check the coil (switch with a known good coil; you do keep one haning around, don't you?)Surging could also be the carb. A good tune up shop should be able to rule out one by one the electronic possibilities with a diagnostic machine. Good luck!
