42-47 project truck help
Well got a 42-47 project from grandpa he saved it from a tree line 15+ years ago. Six cylinder is locked up, got to buying before I had any idea what flatheads really are. Long story short bought a running 8ba and radiator out of a car need to know what hogs head and transmission I need to look for. From all the reading I have been doing I think I need a 49-53 ford truck hogsheads and trans?

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Transmission is the same.
You need the bellhousing and starter plate from an 49-53 truck 8RT (cast iron). There are several more pieces that needs to be adressed...and moved around to make it work. Don´t remember exactly what is needed on a 42-47 but on a 48-50 you need to move the radiator and need the upper and lower sheetmetal piece there. Battery tray is on opposite side so need one of thoose. New front exhaust pipe... Wiring harness needs work since solenoid is moved. Accelerator linkage is different. Have fun with your new project and post some pics. |

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Is the donor transmission a column shift? I would also check the motor mount locations. May need to buy truck water pumps.
Can you share any pictures?

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Not sure that the 6 was original to the truck it (it was a 6 from factory) the head says OHA 6050. The motor mounts, radiator sheeting, battery mount I’m sure I can have someone help me fab. Most of the wiring still on the 8ba they where going to a 302
Just got to work I will try to post a pic of the truck and I have a pic of the transmission later Last edited by Bfield; 09-21-2018 at 06:05 AM. |

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Don't think you can adapt a 6 transmission to a V8.

Re: 42-47 project truck help
OHA on the head denotes a 1950 series "H" 226.

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Everything I have read must only apply to v8s. I will be going next week sometime to a farm that’s has acres of trucks don’t know years yet. Looks like I will try to find a 49-53 8rt Hogshead and transmission I’m gathering that would be best for the 8ba. What would that transmission and hogs head be worth before I head 2 hours away? Thanks guys

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Are you going with a three speed or four speed?
Floor or column shift? If you can find an open drive 1/2 Ton three speed you will not need a hogs head, just a bell housing for 8BA |

Re: 42-47 project truck help
why not see what the 6 cyl. needs to get it to at least turn? may be just a stuck valve or two.

Re: 42-47 project truck help
The 226 is a good engine for a pickup, and the three speed will make it a good driver unless you need a stump puller.

Re: 42-47 project truck help
where are you located? there may be some fordbarners nearby with a v8 truck so you would have a go by.

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Don’t plan on getting ride of the 6 but just setting it aside and someday rebuilding. V8 thing is just a project for grandpa and I he’s really into the 8 so I’d like to do that with him. He just doesn’t remember a lot of details from when he worked on them in his youth so we turned here for advice.
Here’s a pic of when I pulled it home from his shed. |

Re: 42-47 project truck help
Where is the distributor located on the 6? Front of the engine or driver's side?

Re: 42-47 project truck help
I looked in the Ford parts book and Hollander interchange and they both show the same transmission for 6 and 8 cylinder. I've never seen a trans like the one pictured above.
The bed looks like 1948 or a little later. Bob |
