Thanks, I can't take credit for the drawing but I thought it was appropriate.

Looks like a 'shine' runner to me. I am hoping to get down this year Vic. Had a great time there in 2011. Good car show & flea market, good food, and had lots of fun touring around with the Cigar City Flathead group.

Tom, for past events we were staying at my mom's house in Sautee, about 50 miles from Dawsonville however, that may not be an option this time. I'm going to be checking out hotels/motels in the area as it is tough to get a room near the event.

It been a few years since we were there and I had a great time there. We took our 39 2 door sedan which is all original with 20,000 miles showing. Nobody like my 39 sdn. but I do as it is. So far nobody has throw a rock at it. I just inform my wife that we are going this year. I mean it. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. That where we hook up with Vic. He said he knew his way all around there so I let him drive the 39. Guess what we got lost. I though that was funny. Lost in his back yard. The car show was great also car and trucks that I have never seen before. Never seen so manny 40 Fords in one place. Got to be the 40 Fords capital of the world. Did get a jar of Moonshine to bring home. It had cherries in the moonshine and they called it Cherry Surbrise I think. Vic got a jar also. I think he pored it in his truck so he could get home. I hope he didn't get lost going home. If you ever get a chance to go there do. You won't forget it. Vic needs to get us the phone number so we can get on the list for the tour that they have. That was lots of fun.

Hey Ken, it'll be great to see you and Barb at this year’s Moonshine Festival. We did get lost in your '39 but we were making good time... If you Google Dawsonville, Ga. Moonshine Festival you'll find all the info re the event. For the last couple of years we (the Cigar City Flatheads) have gone on our own tour (and we haven't gotten lost yet ). I think we'll do the same this year... As it gets closer we'll figure it out.

I've got two 'haulers. One is a 62 two-door post Galaxie from Rocky Mt, Va. that came with overload springs, a front sway bar, hot FE, and of course in the requisite black. It was likely either a shine car or a cop car, we're really not sure. (For sale, if anybody needs one.)

The other is a black 39 tudor originally from North Georgia. It was supposedly a ridge runner but, to be frank, I've never seen a black 39-40 Ford coupe or tudor from the Appalachians that didn't lay claim to a shady past. Even if they weren't runners, I'll bet a Mason jar or two was sipped in all of them.

Hope to get to Dawsonville one of these days. Beautiful country.

Sincerely, Cuzncletus. Temporarily trapped in the swamps of South Georgia.

OK Vic - I will hit Charlotte Goodguys on Thurs-Fri, and Dawsonville on Sat-Sun. Keep me in the loop on lodging, etc. I don't know if I'll be in my roadster or the 40 to be truthful - we'll see what's running the best (just to be sure) but more than likely the 40 since I will have just returned from Bonneville in late August.

Vic do you know who Dawsonville is famous for? That would be awesome Bill from Dawsonville, driver of the #9 melling ford when he set the closed coarse speed record back in the day. I knew that you knew that. IVT1

Yes, I do know that! We (the Cigar City Flatheads) have been attending the Moonshine Festival for the last six or seven years, cruisin' up from the Tampa Bay area in our Flatheads and enjoying all that the North Georgia Mountains have to offer. I'm looking forward to the 2013 event.

Hi Vic, I hope we can make it with ya'll to the moonshine festival this year. We drove the little 60 HP flathead to the N.C. Outer Banks last week. Some 1157 miles. Monday thru Saturday. I encountered a few hill but the 60 made it over them OK. We may drive the 66 Merc if that isn't too new of a car. If so I'll fire up the 60 again. Just let us know where to find you, cause it make take me a little longer to get there!

Hi Jim, I hope you can make it as well. I'm looking forward to another fun event. Hopefully I won't encounter any starter (or other) problems this year. As we get closer to the event I'll post all the particulars relevant to what the Cigar City Flatheads group has planed for the weekend. Keep having fun with that "A" V8-60. Vic

You guys are lucky to events like Moonshine and Barn Bash you need to support them. Sure wish we had events like that on the west coast.

Bill, we started the "Barner's Bash" eight or nine years ago, it has expanded to events on the East Coast, New England, etc. All it takes is a little planning and promotion here on the FordBarn and the next thing you know, you've got an event... Ya know what they say... "If you build it, they will come"...

We are going to drive one of our junkers down there. So we better get a motel room. Where is everyone staying Vic. I have paid for the tour. Who all going on this forum? Might drive the 39 Conv. Just paint the 39 Std. the one we had down there a few years ago. It still all apart.

Hi Ken, glad to know you are going to be at the Moonshine Festival this year. For the past two years we (the Cigar City Flatheads) have done our own tour on the Friday before the event, the same day the Festival does their tour... We've stayed at my mom's house in the past however, this year we are looking at hotel/motel accommodations south of Dawsonville on the 400 highway. I'll post the hotel info when we confirm it. Looking forward to seeing you and Barb. Vic

How do you lead a tour when you get lost in the city limits? Just had to say that.

Ken, I'm glad to hear you are going to the Festival. Is it going to be a surprise to us which junker you drive?

We always stay at Dalonega, about 10-12 miles N/O Dawsonville. We either stay at the Days Inn there or the Holiday Express.

It looks like we'll have a bunch of "Barner's" attending the Moonshine Festival this year, that's great! The Cigar City Flatheads are planning a tour of our own on the Friday before the Festival and, as a tribute to "Redneck", we'll be calling it the "Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost" tour... We'll be posting more info on the tour route as we get closer to the event. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in October.

The dates are Friday, October 25th to Sunday, October 27th. If you decide to take the tour with the Cigar City Flatheads aka the Lost Boys... We'll meet at the Old Sautee Store in Sautee-Nacoohee at 9:00am on Friday the 25th. If not, we'll see you in Dawsonville Friday evening at the swap meet at Thunder Road.

Steve and I have booked hotel rooms at the Hampton Inn in Alpharetta, GA, about 30 miles south of Dawsonville. If you are looking for a hotel/motel in the area, this might be a good spot. Here is the contact info:
Hampton Inn

Alpharetta, GA

Here's an up date on the "Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Tour", set for Friday, October 25th. We'll meet at the Old Sautee Store in Sautee-Nacoochee, Georgia, just about 50 miles from Dawsonville, at 9:00am. We'll cruise (via the scenic rout)to Cleveland where we'll have breakfast at Ma Gooch's Restaurant. After breakfast we may stop at a restoration shop (I have not confirmed that at this time) and then drive on to Dahlonega for lunch (do you see a pattern developing here). After lunch (at one of the many fine dining establishments) we'll cruise on to Dawsonville and check out the swap meet at Thunder Road. After Thunder Road, diner is an option...

Vic, did you and Steve try to get a place closer to Dawsonville than the Hampton Inn in Alpharetta, GA or was that the closest hotel you could find?

Hi John, Steve was the first to try for a hotel/motel and he got the Hampton Inn in Alpharetta, so we opted to stay at the same place. You can most likely find lodging closer to Dawsonville at this time, as the Festival is still a way off. But you might want to hang out with the rest of us… Sure glad you are having fun driving the wheels off of the '35, Vapor Lock and all...

John Dahlonega is only about 14 miles from Dawsonville , there are motels there & highway 9 is a straight shot to Dville . Its a straight shot from Gainsville to Dahlonega also.
Cheers

It has been reported that available hotel rooms in or near Dawsonville are going for around $150.00 per night... The rate I got (with a AAA discount) is $60.00 per night. If yoiu want to check, here is the info on the hotel again:

Hampton Inn
16785 Old Morris Road (exit 11 on the GA 400 Highway)
Alpharetta, GA
678-393-0990

Also, if you would like to take part in the "Don't follow Me, I'm Lost Tour" on Friday the 25th, PM me and let me know your cell phone #. I'll send mine back to you so we can communicate in Georgia. Vic

Hi Tony, will check out hotels around Dahlonega.
I agree with you about those Cigarcity Flathead boys. They are a wild bunch or rebels driving old Fords that are not properly restored to the highest show point standards, have extremely loud dual exhausts, plus they are constantly seen on the side of the roads in the Tampa area suffering with severe cases of vapor lock and all kinds of other problems!

Hey John, you know we pride ourselves on our ingenuity... Like someone once said "if you can't fix it with Duct Tape, you're not using enough Duct Tape"... Looking forward to seeing you and having some good old Flathead Fun at the Moonshine Festival!

Things are heating up for the 2013 Moonshine Festival as far as the Cigar City Flatheads "Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Tour" taking place on Friday, October 25th goes. I'd like to extend an invitation to all FordBarner’s; in particular those Barner's who don't regularly drive their cars/trucks too far from home, trust me, it'll be fun North Georgia (especially in the Fall) provides beautiful vistas and colorful foliage to say nothing of the vehicles that will be on the tours and at the Festival. We'll even give an award to any "Done Right, High Point" Restoration that experiences Vapor Lock... The Award… A Bag of Ice, naturally! Hope to see you in October.

Hotel Rates are Going Up...

If you are planning on attending the 2013 Moonshine Festival from October 25th to 27th and you haven’t made hotel/motel reservations yet, be prepared for "sticker shock"... We, the "Cigar City Flatheads", are staying in Alpharetta, (just south of Dawsonville), Steve and I booked our rooms a few weeks ago and got a rate of $60.00 per night with a AAA discount. Cliff called the hotel yesterday and was quoted a rate of almost twice as much...

Ken, as it stands right now, I'll be driving the '51 F-1 up but, that could change... Steve is planning on driving his '55 F-100 and Mike is planning on driving his '41 Business Coupe.

Bill, Over the past eight or nine years that we have been attending the event, the weather has been good for North Georgia... More to the point, it has been sunny, cool (jacked required) in the evenings and early morning, getting warm enough in the afternoon to just wear a T-shirt. The foliage is just about in full color and the scenery on the tour is enjoyable. It did rain for a bit a few years ago, when I was with Redneck and his wife in their '39 Standard TuDor, on the Moonshine Festival tour. I guess its best to say; be prepared for warm, cool, wet, dry weather...

Looks like I will be driving my '35 fordor sedan down on Thursday, Oct. 24th, and traveling Interstate 81 from Maryland most of the way down to the MS Festival. Wondering if any other Barner's will be traveling that same route on the same date?
Will most likely be staying in or near Dahlonega, Georgia.

John, we'll be heading up from Tampa on Thursday, maybe we could meet for dinner.. Do you still have my cell phone #? If not, PM me and I'll give it to you. How about the intrepid voyagers Tom & Chuck… do you know if they will be driving down…? See you in October. Vic

I don't know how many Ken, but it seems every other car there is a '40. Maybe 'cause I have one I notice them more.

Have you decided which car you will bring?

I had to get a new computer because lightening screw up the old one. So far haven't got the printer to work with the new one so far. Anyway the 40 is the same color of the 39 and has skirts originals. Its a decent car or I would not have it. It has a high speed rear end which is nice. I also have a Columbia for it. I was born in 40 and I was parcel to a 40 I guess. This has been a rough summer for us. In July we lost our oldest son ,he was in a car wreck. Then our other son not very well either. He has had several operation and needs more. In fact he goes back to the hospital Monday for another operation. He luck to be alive the doctor said. I have been busy working on a house that we are going to rent. Hope to have it done in a couple of weeks. Don't have much time for the old cars it seams anymore.. Age is becoming a problem for me I guess.

Ken, for the last couple of years, we (the Cigar City Flatheads) have held our own tour, apart from the Moonshine Festival tour... that way we can't get lost...LOL
We’ll see you in Dawsonville Friday evening at Thunder Road for the cruise-in.

Gee wiz Vic, I wonder if she realizes that she forgot to button her top? She may get a chill riding in a Roadster...maybe she would be more comfortable in a fordor sedan .

Maybe she would be more comfortable. But you might get a distracted driving ticket!

We will have just two trucks going up on Thursday, my '51 F-1 and Steve's '55 F100. We are meeting at SR 50 at 8:00am at the Mickey D's just off I75. If you guys from Crystal River are going up I75, maybe we can cruise up together... Let me know. As always, we are looking forward to seeing everyone and having a blast.

Vic, no need for just one to volunteer, we can get all of those ladies in my fordor, will have plenty of room .

We will be leaving the Baltimore area sometime Wednesday morning and heading down Interstate 81. Will drive about halfway, ~ 350 miles, and hopefully arrive in Dahlonga Thursday afternoon. Looking forward to the fun!!

I see Tom just about everywhere I go in the last month . Saw him at the PA Barner's Bash in September, The Rodder's Journal Revival at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore a couple weeks ago, and then again at Hershey, PA we crossed paths in the pouring rain. He keeps those Flathead powered machines rolling whenever he can, but maybe it's time to lay low and catch up some on the honey do list.

Hi Jim, I don't know what that's all about... But "too tacky"... I know that the grocery store, next to Thunder Road, has caused some problems in the last couple of years because of the parking situation. I guess we'll have to wait and see how things go once we get there. Vic

Damn, I will be disappointed if the flea market is not there. I picked up some great deals there in 2011.

We may need someone in Georgia like Lawson to get a new Mayor elected for Dawsonville

It's just a guess on my part but I think the flea market will still take place. I've also been told that the "car show" that has been in the parking area at Thunder Road will now be at the School between Thunder Road and down town Dawsonville.

From what I understand on the parking pass I received is that the Middle School grounds will be for Fords only. This should lighten-up the volume of cars that jammed packed the grocery store parking lot.

A "Ford Only" parking area would be very cool, especially if it is at the school, that's half way between down town and Thunder Road, less walkin'...

Mike, we will be leaving SR50 at 8:00 am tomorrow. There will only be two trucks this time, my '51 F-1 and Steve's '55 F-100. If you see us on I 75, we'll be happy to cruise along with you. Hope we can hook up.

Hi Jim, I'm not driving the '39CS up this time, I'll be bringing the '51 F-1. I've got a bunch of extra parts but not a starter motor... Looks like "Long Johns" might be the uniform of the day... See you and Sam on Friday. Vic

Murphy's Law struck this morning... I took the '51 F-1 out to run some errands and, when I came out of one stop, there was water on the top of the left front fender... I opened the hood and could see evidence of a slight water leak at the base of the upper tank on the radiator... Not having enough time to pull the radiator, have it repaired and re install it today, I opted for plan "B", the '39 CS... I had planned to replace one water pump on the '39 (as the pulley shaft was letting some water out) when I returned from the Moonshine Festival... Instead, I spent the morning swapping out one water pump on the '39, I also greased everything and put in a new set of spark plugs... now I have to transfer things from the '51 into the '39 and give her a wash. I put the top down several weeks ago and, at this point, I think I'll leave it down as it is a real pain in the butt to put up without help... Undaunted, we continue. I just love my Flatheads.

We arrived at Dehlonega at noon today. Chuck L arrived at 4:00 pm. We may ride to Dawsonville and see if anything is happening there. I had a starter jam up on my 35 when we got to the hotel. Had to remove the field case and move and twist the armature to get it unlocked but otherwise this car did not miss a beat on the 700 mile trip from Maryland. Put everything back together and we are good to go...until maybe the next time

It's 6:00pm, (do you know where your Flatheads are?) we just checked in at the Hampton Inn just off exit 11 on the 400 highway. If anyone reading this is here for the Moonshine Festival give me a call (you should have my cell phone#). We'll see everyone that is going on the "Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Tour" tomorrow at 8:00 am at Thunder Road.

Tony, that's a great offer and it would be most appreciated if you would. I thought I might look around the swap meet to see if I could find a backup to have for down here and on the way home but with my luck there would not be a single one to be found. This was about the only spare part I did not bring, so of course that was a bad omen. What you bring is usually never needed. This starter has locked up on the flywheel several time before but never as bad as this time. Could always get it to release by tapping it or rocking the car back an forth with transmission in gear.

We had a great day at the Moonshine Fest. Met some barners.

and wiped out Vic.

I think 90% of the '40s in the USA are here this weekend. A very impressive showing.

Love the pics, that black 36 coupe is just plain gorgeous.
It's great to see the roads all filled with period cars rather than them just parked up in rows on a showfield. Great to see them being used too.

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Paul.

Look at this contraband we found being smuggled into the north Georgia mountains. This is how you transport a torque tube when you're driving a '35 Sedan (JM35) wink- wink

Yeah, had every spare part imaginable except a starter and Kiwi Tony brought one here for me. We are at Thunder Road now, getting ready to check the flea's and then walk up to Dawsonville Center Square. Great show, great time!!

Hi Everyone, Add my thanks for you'all's postings.

Vic, Thanks for getting me to take a second look at posts 273 & 274. Cut up a pretty Tudor, to make a phake Phaeton? I hope it was done a long time ago, at least. To each his own with his toys.

#267, the group shot, is that 41ford1 in the back row with the red cap? What's he driving?

#276 & #288, DAVID PEARSON, Oh My Goodness. 105 NASCAR Victories, 3 Championships! Kiwi Tony and his super sweet '36 with what looks like the rare Pines Winterfront Grill, he's being nice and lending David a running board. And Vic, looking satisfied! Too much fun being had by all!

Hey Jeff, that is an absolutly stunning '35 3 Window coupe done in a '40's style Westergard or Coachcraft fashion. My personal favorite car from the whole show. I believe it was lowered the old fashioned way and NOT with airbags. As you can see it has a built 24 stud Flatty. It was also sporting a '40's style custom interior with a 1940 Ford dash. The car was so pretty in person you just couldn't believe it.

You should move it to the top of your list, Bill. The way the Festival has been growing in recent years, it will be too big to enjoy before long. There is only so much space in that little town.

Another fun day at the Moonshine Festival in Dawsonville. This show seems to have doubled in size since the last time I attended.
We kept going back to the distillery for free moonshine samples as often as we could today. We just told them we knew Vic and they kept pouring the samples .
T shirts from '11 and '12 shows went on sale today at 3 for $10.00, so we all bought a bunch of them to take home for the family.
We leave Dahlonega and head for Maryland tomorrow morning.

Well, after another excellent adventure with my Flathead Friends, we are back home in Florida. Mike (Henry Floored) has the internet on his cell phone (too high tech for me) so he was able to post photos during the show. I will post a few that I took that aren't duplicates (I hope). The ride home was relatively uneventful except for one short bout with the dreaded (some say nonexistent) Vapor Lock, after a stop for gas. At the last gas stop, Mike noticed that the right rear tire looked low so we aired it up and continued on down the road. Once we got off the interstate we were stuck in some heaver traffic for several miles. We went over some rail road tracks and lost the right front hub cap... good thing I've got more because we couldn’t stop to try to retrieve it... This morning I went out to the '39 CS only to find that the right rear tire was flat... Oh well... At least she got us up and back under her own Flathead power, just a short 1,400 mile trip.
I want to thank everyone that took part in the Festival, especially those that went with us on the "Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Tour". Gene (40cpe) mapped out the route we took and it was exciting to say the least. Back at Thunder Road we met Ken (Redneck) and his wife Barb with their “new” ’40 Ford Rag Top as well as some of the usual suspects like Kiwi Tony, Ken Alabama, Buster (Cushman Man), etc. This event is information overload for Ford lovers. Let me stop “jaw jackin’ and post some photos.
Here's Chuck L. enjoying the tour behind the wheel of my '39 CS.

In the lead, Gene in his '40 Coupe followed by JM in his '35 Sedan. I was too busy "holding on" with Chuck driving, to take any photos of the cars/trucks behind us…

It was a beautiful day for a drive in a Flathead...

Back at Thunder Road, this '40 Merc Coupe could be had for $21,000, I only needed an additional $20,900 to be able to swing it...

Here are Ken (Redneck), his wife Barb and their '40 Convertible.

I couldn't convince Ken to race me in the '39 CS for "Pinks"...

Although I tried...

Here's JM going back for another "free sample" of Shine...

Steve with his '55 F-100

Me with the '39 CS.

Chuck expressing his absolute "joy"… after sampling a Funnel Cake...

Kiwi Tony hard at work as the Ambassador of the Moonshine Festival and Mid-East representative of the "Cigar City Flatheads"... I wonder if visions of Flatheads were dancing in his head…?

Have you ever seen a more beautiful "rear end"?

Buster (Cushman Man) with his "just finished" '34.

Chuck & Steve relaxing in and around JM's '35 Sedan. Is that watter or "shine"...

That's it for me and my photos this year, I'm already thinking about next year. And, I'll make room for Bill Wzorek to ride "shotgun"...

We just pulled in to Salem, VA ( ~ 10 miles from Roanoke, VA) for the night. We took a short cut from Dawsonville that turned out to be 2-1/2 hours longer .
Forgot to mention the '35 is running like a scald dog and no more starter problems.

2 1/2 hours? Sounds like you should have gone back the way you came in. Over the mountains. Was it an easier route?

Well, Wow, what a car Show! I was hoping to meet some of the Barners this weekend, saw some of your cars and truck. Maybe next year. Ford definitely had a presence at this show! All of those 40's. That is a great show that everybody needs to see. I took a camera and was overwhelmed that I didn't even get 1 pic.

It was no easier than the route we came in on but took us 2-1/2 hours longer. My arms felt like they were going to drop off from all the hairpin turns. The good news is we got to see Dollywood and Pigeon Forge . Also, we actually found gas here in Salem, Va at $2.85/gal!!! Have not bought gas that low in many years.

Vic, I would like to attend at least a part of a "Barner's Bash" in Fl with my '50 Ford. I still need to drive it in 5 southern states to complete my quest of driving in all 48 states. However, i am having a knee replacement, probably in early Dec. and don't know if I could drive that much before March. We'll see.

I did not count the 40 Fords but there was at least 50 there. There was 378 cars registered for the car show. Not too many original cars. There were people frpm Calif. there. One car from Oregon there that I saw.

Cecil, we would love to have you back in Florida for the 2014 "Barner's Bash" (if we actually have it). We'll push the date to mid March if that will work for you. I haven't started to look at possible dates yet, still trying to get the Moonshine Festival out of my system... LOL Vic

Hey Chuck - you need to start a list of all the 'Barners cars you've driven!

Tom, we missed ya... How about the 2014 Florida "Barner's Bash"? If we have one it'll be sometime in March...

The car was so pretty in person you just couldn't believe it.
That '35 3-window was built and owned by Josh Mills of Marietta, GA. Believe it now calls NC home.

That a great bunch of pictures. I half to say that one of the nicest car show I have been to. Just a little bit of anything you could think of. Its a great cause to raise money for kids that have no one. They should have had some of them there. I know the people would have gone out of there way to make it enjoyable for them. All I have is a daughter now. We lost both of our sons this year. That took a spark out of me. I know I will miss them a great deal. One should not half to bury there children. It not to be that way. I wonder what next down the road?

Hey Vic,
This is Mike Sydney from Homosassa. We met in Dawsonville. My 40 Flatty is acting like it is starving for gas when I get over 50mph. Carb seems to have plenty of fuel. Got any ideas? Fuel pump? Fuel line? Air leak?

Hi Mike, Your description of the problem could be attributed to any and all of the things you mentioned however, I would check for any vacuum leaks and adequate fuel flow from the fuel pump to the carb. Also, check at idle, turn the air/fuel mixture screws one at a time to see if they produce any change in the engine idle. If they do not, that would most likely indicate a bad power valve. If everything with respect to fuel delivery is up to par and the carb adjustments do have an effect, I'd check the timing/distributor, etc. Without actually being there, it's tough to pin down the source(s) of the problem.

Have you tried slowly pulling out the choke to see if it goes away ? Also make sure your fuel pump isnt sucking air around the lid if you have a steel bowl fuel pump. If its a glass bowl make sure it isnt sucking air around the top of the glass bowl.
