Re: 4 barrel carb for 55 - 272V8
ECZ-9425-A is actually a '56 4bbl intake manifold.
The bolt pattern on that manifold fits the Holley 4000 'Teapot' carburetors, preferably a '56 version because the '55 carb has an intake manifold mounted choke stove. (photo 4) It may seem odd but your carburetor options are limited by the distributor, if the engine still has an original '55 or '56 style distributor. .. (example photos 1 & 2 ) A vacuum controlled Loadomatic '55 or '56 distributor cannot advance the timing correctly if connected to a newer carburetor. (image 3, in the yellow circle) If you have a '57+ distributor you can use a carb adapter to install a small (400 / 500) cfm '57+ carburetor. Last edited by dmsfrr; 09-21-2020 at 12:00 AM. |

Re: 4 barrel carb for 55 - 272V8
Like dmsfrr stated you have a '56 intake manifold (ECZ-A) that requires the carb with the choke assembly mounted to the carb and not the manifold like '55 had. I have some restored '56 Holley 4000 teapot carbs that are correct for your manifold and will work with either the single diaphragm '55 distributor, or the '56 dual diaphragm distributor, It can also be easily modified to work with the correct vacuum signal for ported vacuum to 1957 and later distributors.
If you are interested in one of the carbs I have, you can send me a PM or email/call me at [email protected] (586) 612-1650. Sal |

Re: 4 barrel carb for 55 - 272V8
You should be able to buy a new aftermarket 59-up distributor for less than $100. Pre-59 distributors use a breaker plate that rides on ball bearings, and the vacuum advance canister arm is straight. Newer distributors' vacuum advance canisters have a straight arm that is compatible with Pertronix lll conversions. You might also prefer a 57-up carburetor to the Teapot Holley 4000. Newer carburetors will require an adapter if used on your manifold (already said). Rather than spending money on an adapter, you might want to get a "B" manifold, usually found on ebay.

'57 style ECZ-9425-B intake manifold.
The one in the second photo has longer carb mounting studs and a heat isolating spacer on top, a good idea. Last edited by dmsfrr; 10-07-2020 at 11:18 PM. |
