New Twist

Well, this morning I went to start the beasty and to my surprise, it didn't.

How many can say they just put a new twist on the Bendix spring?

This is what ya get fer learnin me how to take an upload pictures!

And before you ask, yes, that is a home made boiler in the background, I also make small live steam engines when not working on the "Beasty".

So far I've only made the walking beam live steam model, but have no boiler, so I run it on compressed air.

I've seen distorted Bendix drive springs from kickback, but looking at your picture, I'm trying to figure out how that one is even possible. Half the spring is left hand turns, and the other half is right hand turns. Is this some kind of trick?

I did as a kid, and it worked great until my brother bent it out of shape.
I still can't figure out how this got twisted like it shows, and especially if it has a shaft going through the center.

Tom, somehow I knew you would appreciate that, I have also built from scratch/prints a walking beam engine. That boiler I have tested at 100psi without a whimper, but the popoff is 75psi. I have also scratch built a few of my own design. Live steam is a wonderful medium to play with.

And just to stay on topic, I asked myself the same question, how could they be heading right and left without breaking, though I can say I have broken my fair share. But since I am running 12v through a 6v starter, that would most likely explain the twist.

My phone cord does that quite often also, but then the cord is soft and easily twisted.

My first phone was a Motorola bag phone. Do you remember those? Boy I thought I was cool lugging that 12lb monster around with me.

I think you are yanking our chains. Study that second picture of the spring.
How could half the coils have come unwound and then rewound in the opposite direction?
Even if the spring fell off the shaft while the engine was running, then got tangled up in the flywheel, it just couldn't happen.
Someone's been playing with Photoshop.

BTW, both screws were in it too !!

I had on that did that. It was a T spring that is wound the opposite direction as the A.

This was a functioning bendix spring until this morning, and that is what caused me to change the bendix.

that is strange to look at. I have been running 12v to my starter for a year now. I keep it in mind and try to keep my rolling to under 5 seconds. But I dont think its 12v that did that to it. maybe timing way advanced?

Well, I doubt it, it didn't start, just kinda had a fit and that was the result. I always start with the spark retarded. Engine shut off, gas closed, spark up! Always!

If it did that to the spring what did it do to the shaft? Were the bolts still in place?

did the shaft snap? I guess im not very careful I often forget to return to retard before starting. And have throttle set to 1/8 to 1/4 and I played around with the timing way advanced/retarded and anywhere else it would start.

Oh no, the shaft was clean as a whistle and not bent nor tweeked at all. Got me a "new" modern style and plopped the starter back in, works like a champ now.

If the motor is anywhere but stone cold, it starts at a whisper of the starter. Cold takes a wee bit of choke, but that's the only difference in starting.
