Default Carpet or rubber mats?

I've done a search but can't find an answer. Did the '31 deluxe roadster originally come with carpet or rubber mats in the driver's compartment? Mine had a brown carpet when bought last year. It looks like both rubber and carpet are available from the suppliers. I think only rubber was used in the rumble seat floor.........Glen

I am not sure about rubber or carpet. I installed a rubber mat in mine as I think it was more practical when the car was new. Roads then were mostly mud or dirt, some gravel. Roads these days make a carpet practical too. A rubber mat is easier to clean. I know this doesn't answer your question however I believe that the Model A was based more on practicality for its time period.

Thanks, guys. Mine looks just like Marco's, also brown with the rubber insert near the pedals and shifter area. Perhaps the Standard roadsters had rubber mats. Hope the repro carpets are synthetic and all weather cause in a roadster, even with side curtains ...... water is going to get in

Difference between a Roadster and a Cabriolet. No wet floor mats ( lol ) !

Guys, I have ridden in Marco's roadster and it most assuredly has rubber floor mat, not carpet.

By the way, it runs like a dream.

This is from his site, is it not his car?

The original floor carpet (or mat) had holes just large enough to serve their purpose. No "boots" were used.

Mike, the rubber is located in the carpet in the area around the shifter/brake as Marco's picture shows. The standard roadster had full rubber mats.

Wayne,

You are correct. Cabriolet is the best of both worlds...open vs closed.

I allways thought that the deluxe models all came with carpet. I feel the same as Growley Bear Chet. I did my 30-31 standard roadster as well as all of the rest of my model A's with rubber mats .

My stuff is all standard models and I have never had the carpet mats in any of mine yet. I'm seeing a few possible advantages of carpet mats for todays cars . I've allways had to trim the edges and sometimes the holes for the levers. It looks like the carpet has borders and would be an easier fit with no cutting. The problem of sometimes tearing the mats if they need to be removed and replaced would be greatly reduced or removed completely. They could be vacumed and small remaining dirt residue would sink out of sight. If I ever got another town sedan, I would want carpet .

In the Judging Standards it states for 31 deluxe roadster CARPET in the front and RUBBER MAT in the rumble.

I should probably buy the Judging Standards if I have these kinds of questions. My car is a driver that I'd like to keep original but not totally restored. The carpet in a roadster IMO is a little impracticable but it makes the car look sporty. Based on my preference for carpet and the Judging Standards which call for carpet, I'll be replacing mine with carpet instead of rubber.

Thanks to all for your input

Glen

I just returned from French Lick late last night. We had a GREAT time with friends both old and new!

I've never had a rubber mat in the front. If I ever own a standard model then I guess I'll own a front mat.

Hmmm... It appears that I have most certainly blown it then. My sincere apologies for the misinformation. In the series of photos I took documenting the roadster, I didn't get ONE good shot of the floor from the interior, only from underneath. D'oh!

I was primarily interested in documenting the details of the chassis and other undercarriage parts. And, for the record, the underside of my car looks exactly like yours now. Thanks to you for all your help!!
