Default Carb adaptor for stock intake manifold? (single 94)

Question, I've heard of guys using the stock intake, flipping it upside down, and using an adaptor to fit a downdraft carb.

A guy here locally said he might have one, but it turned out he didn't.

My question is, does anybody know if such an adaptor can be had? If so, where?

Thanks!

In the '50's, we would cut off the vertical riser on the intake, weld a freeze over the hole, then cut a hole in the top and form our own riser and carb mounting plate for the V/8 carb. We then had to use an electric fuel pump because of the height of the carb mounting.
I welded one with nickel arc and one with a torch using cast iron rod and some kind of flux.

Here is a picture of one with a '41 Ford 6 Cylinder Carb. Going to install it one of these days?

Great idea! You just put a plate on the bottom and still have a heated manifold. Shucks, why didn't I think of that!
IDEA! bolt on a Zenith carb below the plate and really have a conversation piece!

I got a technical question. The stock manifold is cast iron, correct? So how can you weld it? I heard cast iron is nearly impossible to weld properly.

You may want to consider putting a plug up into the bottom so that gas doesn't pool down in the bottom of that long up pipe. You can weld the plug to the bottom block off plate.

You can braze it with bronze

Cast iron brazes easily, but can crack afterwards if not cooled slowly.

Another choice for backyard manifolding: The B manifold has a flat on top, which could be adequately refined to a smooth surface with just a file. The flat seems just barely capable of accepting a 1950's 2-bolt carb to 3-bolt V8 carb, or one of the ones that just rotates a 6 cylinder base 90 degrees. Getting a solid seal against the manifold casting might require an additional simple flat plate sandwiched in. With that, you might even manage to mount a 2-bolt carb directly.

Thanks for the info and the pics guys. I realize how easy it is to make one, with access to the proper equipment. Unfortunately I don't right now.

Does anybody know if such an adaptor is manufactured in some kind of bolt on application?

Thanks again for all your knowledge!

Not sure. I was speaking to another member and he said he was running with 46.

I'm open to any advice anyone has on this subject too, I've never done this before.

The motor is otherwise stock. My main concern is reliability and making sure it runs well. Any extra "pep" would be a plus.

Thanks again!

Brazing rod.

After reading down two posts I notice that your question was succinctly answered. So I'll just post some pics of how I installed a Holley one barrel downdraft on an A with a manifold that I assembled many years ago. The auto choke even worked.

On "running well and reliability"...do not modify any engine until you have it running well stock! Modifying to fix a problem is simply creating a deeper stack of problems!
Bolt on would be easy with no tech beyond an electric drill with a B manifold; with A, there is no reasonable way without some sort of welding approach.

I have a downdraft inlet manifold for sale. Pictured.

That is what I did when I made one years ago. I bored the manifold to clean it up then made a plug with a O ring on the plug. Then no gas could get down there.

You can weld it with nickel rod, or braze it.
