Default Temp sensor location

Forgive my ignorance, but would there be much if any difference in reading a temp sensor mounted in the head as opposed to mounted in the water pump?

The temperature wants to be taken near the output of the engine. On 32 to 34 engines the water pumps are at the outlets. On 37 to 53 engines the water pumps are on the input of the engine and you would be reading temperatures of the cooled water from the radiator. G.M.

It depends on the position of the water pumps. On the early head mounted water pumps there would not much of a difference in temp reading. On the later block mounted pump engine cooled water is being pulled from the radiator. A sensor at the pump will indicate a lot cooler than at the head.

Thanks. I should have clarified that. This is on a '53.
