New top dead center tool
Attached is pictures of the latest timing tool to set top dead center without an assistant. This item is in every home. It is a toilet tissue holder.
Simply cut out the cross section in one end.Turn the timing pin around and insert the cut out end in the pin and the other end against the bottom of radiator. Turn crank until you hear the tissue holder pop out. Place a card between the radiator & holder to protect the radiator. This is a idea from another club member. |

Re: New top dead center tool
I just hold a finger on the pin and slowly turn the crank. I stop when it finds the dimple. One job, one man.

I simply put the car in third gear and rock it Very easy by yourself. Don’t turn the engine over using the fan. That crank pulley is designed to drive the fan, not the engine.

Re: New top dead center tool
Wow, talk about a Rube Goldberg invention to make a simple timing pin thing into a bathroom/garage DYI project. So while I am out timing the car what is my wife going to use in the bathroom?
Sorry, but I will stick with Henry's way. |

Yeh, and a bypass toilet roller will pop out after you have passed it.
To find a TDC on anything you have to rock it past and back to get a happy medium. |

If for some reason a person needs a third hand, a rubber band is simple, uncomplicated, easily obtainable, and doesn't take up much room in the toolbox. |

Charlesea, I appreciate this post. If I had lost the use of one arm I would really truly appreciate the post. Don't stop bringing us different views on how to get things done.

Re: New top dead center tool
I thought this was a helpful idea. How about a small rubber plunger head to stabilize it against the radiator? I'm probably over thinking this
