choke rod assembly
I have been looking for a good diagram or photo of the choke rod assembly IE. the way the washers go on to the rod. The small metal cone shaped washer, the rubber washer, the leather washer, all in relation to their placement on the rod and spring. I'm assembling a new set of parts and can't find any info on the correct placement of these items.

Re: choke rod assembly
If you have the Bratton's cataloge 2017 Page 69 choke rod grommets it explains it. Part# 14670.

Re: choke rod assembly
The rubber grommet fits on the firewall. The leather cupped grommet goes on the engine side of the firewall, with the smooth side toward the firewall followed by the metal cup washer then the spring. This is out of Bratton's Catalog.

Re: choke rod assembly
Thanks guys, I've been looking in everything I have and there were no diagrams, I shall dig out Bratton's catalog. Go figure, I have done these many times, just can't remember what day it is now! LOL

Re: choke rod assembly
Look what I found on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr6Plf3V5rU go figure you can find anything there. from what I have read this is the correct assembly order. Ford never used the rubber bushing through the firewall.

Re: choke rod assembly
I think one of the things that confused me, was the fact that the new metal washer has a hole that's to large and lets the spring run thru it, rather rather than holding the spring in place. I wish I could find the old one, that I put away for safe keeping.

Re: choke rod assembly
Hey Frank, you do realize that those parts you put away for safe keeping are still sitting there in the same place you left them, and they are safely kept.

Re: choke rod assembly
learning something new all the time from you all.
I just replaced the set a couple weeks ago and didn't know what the large rubber washer was for... Now I do and will be fixing it tonight.

Re: choke rod assembly
I had the same problem, I flatten the cone a little but had to open the coils on the spring by bending them out a little, test it before fitting it.

Re: choke rod assembly
the you tube is a good starting point. BUT he is using the start rod grommet on the choke rod. the choke rod on the outside of the firewall goes leather washer cup washer facing the firewall spring and sleeve.

Re: choke rod assembly
This is the kit from Snyder's. Where does the plastic / hard rubber piece on the far right go?

Re: choke rod assembly
The rubber part on the right in the photo of parts above is for the starter rod, not the choke rod.
The leather washer goes to the exterior of the firewall, followed by the cup washer. The concave face of the washer faces the carburetor such that it traps the spring. The hole in the cup washer needs to smaller than the diameter of the spring.

Re: choke rod assembly
As I suspected the hole in the repro coned washer is not correct, It's far to big, the spring slips right through it. As luck would have it, I was looking for a small screw and ran across an original coned washer! How about that for planing? Still don't know where the one is I put away for safe keeping! Humm! The diameter of the hole is smaller than the repro washers, it just slips over the shaft and retains the spring. That's the reason why I got so confused, you see I'm not loosing it afterall. Now I understand the correct order of things at the firewall there was never a rubber grommet the leather goes next to the firewall the cone washer then the spring the cone faces the engine. Wow this was a challenge, almost like understanding my wif's instructions on how to take the garbage out to the dumpster! LOL Good thread thanks guys. Frank PKNY

Re: choke rod assembly
A little grease on the leather washer stops it from squeaking.

Re: choke rod assembly
OK here's a new point on the same subject, the grommet that is used for the starter rod, which way does it go into the firewall? The shoulder towards the engine or towards the inside of the cab? That would be the grommet on the far left in the photo.

The larger shoulder goes away from the firewall I believe.
