Two tooth steering box lower race removal
Trying to remove lower race. I’ve had good results in the past with 1/8” drift as Les Andrews describes in his Mechanic’s Handbook. But NOT this time. Looking for suggestions as to alternative method. What has worked for you?

You put the drift into the two threaded holes and "walk" the bearing out?

Heat the housing with a propane or butane torch until it is fairly hot then dunk it in cold water . This normally does the trick then use the drift trough the two holes .

Re: Two tooth steering box lower race removal
I went through the exercises described by others here, to no avail - the bugger refused to budge. I finally looked carefully at the bearing race surface and noted that there was almost no wear and decided to leave it and use it as is. Unlike the upper bearing, the lower bearing sits in a pool of oil, carries a low rotational force, hence minimal potential for wear.

Re: Two tooth steering box lower race removal
I had a little trouble getting mine out but had no choice, the bottom bearing had failed and chewed it up pretty bad. I finally had to sit it on a thin board on concrete floor and used a shorter drift alternating between holes to get it started. Then switched to a longer drift after I got it moving.

Re: Two tooth steering box lower race removal
Make a “tool” if you have the capability to press thru both holes at once
Then put in a press. Equal pressure should work better |

I think you are dead-on here. the original Ford tool had two prongs to force it with equal pressure. The KR Wilson catalogs all claimed that "walking" races out could enlarge the part the race was being pushed out of. |
