Waterless coolant
Does anyone here have actual EXPERIENCE with waterless coolant in a Model A?

May want to give them a call. Might have been something to do with for use in pressurized modern cooling systems that can take higher boiling points - am a little foggy now on the details. |

Re: Waterless coolant
The A does not need it. Save your money and grief and fix your system. Stay away from all the band aid fixes. Most of our radiators are plugged to some degree.

Re: Waterless coolant
Once again asking for experience. My “A” cools just fine.

Re: Waterless coolant
I use Evans waterless in my A. My thinking is no water = no rust. It is not recommended to be used in an un-pressureized system. My radiator has been pressurized. I cleaned my block with Rust 911. I have been using the Evans coolant since with no sign of rusting.

When you cleaned your block did you just let the Rust 911 sit in the block? David Serrano |

Re: Waterless coolant
After flushing the block thoroughly I refilled it with RUST 911 drove it a few miles then let it sit overnight. The next day I drained it and the mixture came out dark black. I flushed it and refilled with a fresh batch of RUST 911 and drove it a few more miles and again let sit overnight. This time when I drained it the water came out grey. I repeated the procedure again and when drained this time the water was clear. I flushed it again and took the radiator hoses off so the water in the block could evaporate. The next day I stuck an air hose in the block to help evaporate any water. When I was happy that the water was all gone I reconnected the hoses and topped it off with the Evans Waterless coolant.

Re: Waterless coolant
It is not uncommon once the flush of the Rust 911 starts to turn grey/clear, to run it for days/weeks before flushing it out. Since it is not acidic, is safe to leave in for longer periods. Speaking from my personal experience, let mine stay in on a 3rd application for 2 weeks running my A for 30- 60 minutes driving around, on most days.

My cooling system is not pressurized. I do have an overflow bottle to have some place for the expansion volume to go into, and then it sucks it back in when it cools off. The expansion volume is quite large between cold and hot. There is absolutely no rust in this cooling system. I have not flushed it or changed out the coolant in many years. It still works great. Hope this helps.

Re: Waterless coolant
Thanks Chris and Jim. Exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Our Great Race team is considering using Evans coolant as an insurance policy. We had no cooling issues in last year’s GR from Buffalo to Halifax, but So Cal in mid June might be a different world. Thanks again.

Re: Waterless coolant
I just changed out A head where the engine had the Evans coolant. Not sure I’m a fan of it but I put it back in at customers request. System and old head did seem clean. It’s a thicker consistency for sure .
Seemed to be ok. I put in a 6.1 head. No issues . Larry Shepard |

Re: Waterless coolant
The seasoned Model 'A' guy I bought my 28 Truck from swears by waterless coolant so it was in my truck. He drove it in the heat of Nevada with no overheating problems at all and even drove his Model A coast to coast a couple times. So far I'm pretty happy with the waterless coolant as I've driven it a good bit in Florida with zero overheating or leaking problems.
