Default Door check strap rubber bumper

How do you get the rubber bumper off the door check strap on a 30-31 closed car? There is a metal disk on the end next to the rubber bumper with some slots on it, but I cant seem to figure out how to get that off. Do you have to drill the rivet off on the door securing the metal strap on, or can you get that metal end off, and slide the rubber bumper off from inside the cowl panel?

It's a bit tricky. Use a flashlight and a mirror to see it from the back side. You will see there are two small retaining tabs that need to be bent out straight to separate the "layers" that make up the keeper.

Does anyone have a picture of this?
I thought the rubber just got slid ahead so the steel disc could be turned 90* and removed. I don't recall bending or having to unbend any tabs to install or remove the check on the 30 and 31 trucks I worked on.

The tabs that Marco refers to are on the disk that is the lock for the thicker disk that get turned 1/4th turn to be removed. the tabs keep the thick disk from turning and coming off by mistake.

There are three parts to it. First, the large rubber stop must be pushed out of the way. There is a "cup" with two tabs sticking straight out and positioned approximately 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock if I recall correctly. This cup is slid on first. Next it a thin (paper?) disk that slides on to act as an anti-rattler. Last is the thick retaining disk that has the wide slot half way through it. This is simply lowered from the top down in the notch of your choosing. The cup is then slid over the thick disk as a retainer and the two tabs bent bent over to secure it. The stop rubber is then slid back over the assembly. Removing everything is in reverse.

OK, thanks, I thought the tight fit of the rubber was enough to keep the parts in place. I'll have to look at the tabs the next time I work on the 31 widebed.
