Default Can we post about 1966 Ford Mustangs?

or is that too modern?

A friend of mine, who can't post because of his dyslexia, has a strange problem with his car and I told him that I would seek some advice for him...

May I proceed?

Yes, it’s 54+, no cut off date. There’s some Mustang experts here, hopefully they’ll chime in.

That’s kind of how I saw it too, but I thought I’d check anyway…

OK, so my friend Chuck has a 1966 Mustang and someone following him on a run we were doing, told him that his brake lights were not coming on every time. It was like they only came on when he really stomped the brakes hard.

So Chuck buys a new brake switch and installs it. The brakes seemed to come on every time and he parks his car for the night and goes to bed. The next morning, the Mustang was dead as a doornail- no juice left at all. Well, he hooks a charger to it and as the battery got charged, he sees the brake lights are on. He pushes the pedal and they go out…but 15-20 minutes later, they come back on- no one is in the car.

OK, maybe a bad switch, so he buys another switch and installs it. Yay, the brakes shine when the pedal is mashed and they go out when it isn’t- job is done…
Welll, not so fast. Car is sitting there and after about 15-20 minutes, the brake lights COME BACK ON.

The switch is a mechanical type- stock for the 66 Mustang and there is no adjustment that we can find.

Since I have had great success and support from Fordbarn on my own cars, I told Chuck that I would toss this out and see if anyone else has had Casper the ghost mashing their brake pedal.

What do you folks think?

The bolt that holds the push rod to the brake pedal arm should have an eccentric on it along with a shoulder. There should be some "play" between the push rod and the brake pedal arm.

Make sure the brake pedal arm comes all the way back to the rest position with the push rod disconnected. There should be a spring to return it to the rest position. Insert the bolt and twist it until there is "slop" then hold it and tighten the nut.

Either the master cylinder is not letting the pressure off the system or the brake light switch isn't opening the circuit when the pressure drops. I've had problems with both but the clogged up return port in the master cylinder usually becomes apparent when the car starts to drag the brakes in operation. The car should roll easily when the pressure drops. Some new brake light switches are likely crap but I can't tell you where to get the most reliable type now days. Too much water under the bridge since that last time I had a problem with one. I'd look for NAPA Echlin for a first shot.

I have had this problem with the cheap hydraulic switches, but that's only on 64 1/2 Mustangs. 65 on they are mechanical. There is no bolt, just the pin on the brake pedal. The master cyl rod has a flat on the back that works as a rocker switch. There are also some plastic spacer/bushing as I remember. When this happen to me, I had put I think it was a 69 switch in and when I went to the 66 one the problem went away. Kultulz is a good parts man on here, maybe he can show the different part numbers.
Still thinking about it some more, I have also seen the pedal assembly bushings that hold the pedal, completely worn out and eating into the softer metal in the housing were the pedal goes. Check to see if that is not worn out. The inserts in the pedal assembly are not replaceable, but the plastic bushing are.

Tom in TN, Not being able to see the parts he's working with... a weak/loose pedal return spring would be my first guess. It may be wound around the upper bolt & hub the pedal arm hangs from, with a plastic sleeve inside. ?
Or worn out mounting hardware on the (mechanical) brake light switch.

Question Re: Can we post about 1966 Ford Mustangs?

What is the exact application?

M/T or A/T ?

M/B or P/B?

Vendors such as SCOTT DRAKE advertise a better quality replacement. Might review their site.

The below photos show a NOS switch.

I had the same problem with an F100. It turned out that the truck was haunted so I sold it.

I missed the part about mechanical switch type.

Another place that brake lights can have problems is in the turn signal circuit. The brake lights and turn signals are mixed together through the turn signal switch.

If the fluid is bad (thick) it can cause this too.

I’d be inclined to put the charger on it, then wait for the brakes lights to come on. Then carefully lift the pedal by hand. If they go out, that tells you one thing. If they don’t, you go look elsewhere. Due to the turn signal being in the mix brake lights can be a b### to trouble shoot. I don’t think it applies here, but grounding is also often a problem with weird symptoms.

Thank you all for the suggestions.
Chuck ordered a Scott Drake brake switch Monday. We will see if that works.

I appreciate your help!...and so does Chuck !
