8ba good bellhousing, starter cover rusted out
Have located a good bellhousing at good price, but the starter cover is partially rusted out. Is there a way to fix or replace this? Sorry no photo but will get one if it helps.

It is probably cheaper time wise to replace the starter cover than the time spent repairing what you have. Put an ad in the Wanted section. There are a lot of starter covers available.

Re: 8ba good bellhousing, starter cover rusted out
I hope the 8BA starter plates are easy to find. I know those for '49-'50 Mercury's are hard to find (by themselves). It took me a while to find one and I paid up for it. To be on the safe side, don't get rid of the old one until you find a replacement.

You'd think with the number of these blocks which were cracked there'd be a large number of bellhousings and plates looking for home. |

You could make one if you have some 16 gage sheet metal.
Or if there is still some good metal left on the old one in the starter plate, use that as a partial inside liner for the one you make to slide over it. Last edited by 19Fordy; 05-17-2022 at 02:51 PM. |

I'd like to know the trick of replacing that cup. It seems to be pressed in and there is a lip that seats and holds it.
I tried for a bit to remove one and it was getting distorted. I'm sure they come out and I'd like to know the trick. |

I'm hoping the trick is that since there's no reason to remove them unless they are damaged, then I can just beat it into submission.

Haha, Don't go with too big of a BFH. It's just sheet metal. It didn't grow in there, so it must be able to come out. I just don't know the trick as to how.

Re: 8ba good bellhousing, starter cover rusted out
Hang on, are you talking about the part that covers over the snout of the starter or the starter mounting plate?
If you are concerned about the cover, it's not actually functional other than cosmetic and possibly dust exclusion. I have one car that has run for years without one fitted. So unless you need it to look nice, you don't actually need it, so repairing it ought to be relatively simple. |

Re: 8ba good bellhousing, starter cover rusted out
I have a half bell housing without the starter cup. I initially thought it was for an 8ba but turns out its for a flathead 6. Anyway I was going to fab a replacement cup out of a piece of thick wall pipe. The piece I have is just a tab bit bigger OD than the hole in the bell housing. I was hoping that I could freeze the pipe and heat the housing on the barbie to get it to fit but don't think that will work. The plan was then to have a buddy turn down the pipe enough to allow the freeze/heat process to work. Before final fitment I was going to weld a plate on the end of the pipe to replicate the original cup. But since I found out the housing is for a 6 this is on the back burner. More like a rainy day project now.

When I go to swap meets, if I see a bell housing without a starter plate, I just keep walkin'. If I see a starter plate without a bell housing, I'm on it like a rat on a Cheeto.

I read on the HAMB? Where a guy bought a travel mug, cut the bottom off and used it for the cover. Without the bead, a guy may have to use a bit of epoxy to help hold it. I believe the open end is belled out inside the housing.

Re: 8ba good bellhousing, starter cover rusted out
we are talking 8BA's here aren't we? The starter plate has an angled mount for the starter, but no cover.
I think we need some clarification here. |

Re: 8ba good bellhousing, starter cover rusted out
We're talking the cover that goes over the end of the starter, not the plate it bolts to. (starter plate)
I think. |

A beer can should be able to fit with a little finessing .

A picture instead of a thousand words. My apologies if I'm using wrong terms here. It's all new stuff to me.

Re: 8ba good bellhousing, starter cover rusted out
I would clean up the opening and make a patch out of a piece of 18 ga. steel and weld it in with a mig welder using butt welds.
