Difference between a sport coupe and business/deluxe coupe?
Could any of you enlighten me on the real differences between the sport coupe and a standard hard top coupe? Is it really just the hard shell top versus Carson?
Reason I ask is I am looking at what appears to be a coupe but the owner tells me it was once a sport coupe body. Any gotchas or problems with this I should be wary of? Thanks |

Picture?? There would have to be a lot of metal work done to convert a sport coupe to a regular coupe. JMO

????, having only owned Sport Coupes, the first thing I would ask is why?
As Paul mentioned, the medal work alone would be overwhelming. I would almost say it could not be done and look right. Last edited by WHN; 05-01-2018 at 05:04 PM. |

Re: Difference between a sport coupe and business/deluxe coupe?
My first car in high school was a 1929 special coupe. The wood at the rear window was dry rotted. I remember going to Classic Cars, a junk yard in Gardena, CA and purchasing, disassembling a standard 3 widow top section and making my special coupe into a standard coupe.
I'm wondering if you could do the same to convert a business coupe into a standard coupe. I have a feeling that all 28/29 tops are interchangable. Last edited by Neil Mylar LakewoodCA; 05-01-2018 at 06:03 PM. Reason: Spell Check |

Re: Difference between a sport coupe and business/deluxe coupe?
For all practical purposes, the sport coupe is a soft top that does not fold down and a regular (standard/deluxe) coupe has a steel top. See the attached factory pictures, these are all 28s. The first 3 are of a sport coupe the 4th is a business coupe and the last is a standard coupe. As far as the general construction goes all 4 years are basically the same however the styling is different.

Sport Coupes don't have what I would call Carson tops. To me, those are rigid, removable tops...kinda like early T-Birds and Vettes. But semantics aside, Sport Coupes (and Business Coupes) have non-removable, non-folding fabric tops supported by wood bows and metal braces, and doors with framed windows like a coupe. Standard and Deluxe Coupes have tops with steel sides and only a fabric insert in the roof. The Special Coupe has fabric covered sides but it's still metal underneath. It would be a lot of work to make a Sport Coupe into a Coupe - maybe easier to go the other way but still quite a bit of work. |

Each Model A body style is a WHOLE DIFFERENT ANIMAL. If you cross them up, you end up with a MORPHADITE Car, that nobody wants!!!

I wonder if he meant "Special Couple" and "Standard Coupe"?
That would be an easier change than Sport Coupe to Standard Coupe. |
