Something a bit different oil tube in valley R&R.
In all the years I have spent with my hands inside the valley of Flathead Ford blocks one item that's always been a mystery has been the oil feed tube. Always wondered how it was installed was it screwed in , cast in place or pressed in. Well now at least for me this mystery has been solved.
While working on a recent build the blocks owner mentioned he replaced the oil feed tube. When he purchased this engine the oil feed tube was missing so he simply removed the oil tube from a donner block and installed it into this block. Here's a picture of the oil tube its actually simple to remove and install. Its hard to see in the picture on the outside of the tube in the areas on each end and also the center there's slight machined ribs along the surface. How it seals from leaking is still an unknown when installed. That's to be determined so once the engine is ready I will do a pre oiling test. Here's the secret to the oil tube replacement job. To remove the tube first thread the inside of the tube to 7/16 coarse. Next place a length of 7/16 all thread into the hole and now use a slide hammer to remove the tube. This of course is not a normal task needed in most flathead blocks. However at times I have seen rotted and rusted oil tubes with serious damage the blocks were deemed useless. Now with care a good oil tube can be removed from a cracked not reparable block to be used as a replacement saving the block with the damaged oil tube to be used once again. Its true everyday we learn something new today is one of those days Ronnieroadster.

Thanks Ronnie, I always wondered if those oil tubes could be removed. Be sure to tell us about if it leaks when you do your pretest. Congratulations on both your record Bonneville runs. Fantastic.

OT but is the bore the tube sets in smooth or is there a small ring like counterbore?

If you simply read my book you will see this tube and the explanation of how the swedged areas control the placement/location of it. Mystery solved years ago.

I have used a 1/8" pipe die to thread the end of a bolt,
put that at the end of a slide hammer, screw that into the front of the tube and have at it, works well- three times. Have not tried to put one back in yet. Karl |

Come to think of it,,,,I believe your book is where I remember this from . I knew I had read about it somewhere . I remember a pic with the tube and the rippled ends to help control placement . Tommy |

I've looked at John's book, pages 98-100, regarding the oil tube. I see the pictures, but haven't found text on the subject. Am I missing something? My book is over 12 years old. Could there be 'revisions'? In any event, many thanks for the info and the book.
