Crusty Master Cylinder - Rebuild or Buy New?
My new project 40 has been sitting for a long time and the master cylinder is very crusty. Can these be rebuild or is it better to just buy a new one?
thank you Patrick |

The majority here (I predict) will say 'new'. For me, I re-kit the old ones, if the bore is acceptable. I've done three 'crusty' ones in the last several months, with no problems. I'm not into 'external cosmetics'.

I believe Napa has new ones of good quality.

I too have rebuilt many in my time. However, the last five, maybe six, I have purchased from NAPA. Around $50 if you have an account. They have come with the correct casting and the correct cap!
I figure my time is worth the $50.

This is what I do on everything these days - as no paint will ever last on a master cylinder! |

China can, if venders insist, make anything the US can make. The master cylinders from NAPA are VERY good quality. And, like I d stated in an earlier post, about $50 if you have an account with them.

I agree, after all China can make Nukes. But the problem with China parts as I see it is that the vendors want cheaper and cheaper parts so the quality has to suffer in order to keep costs low to meet the demands of the vendor. When I bought my '39 p/u the PO installed an off shore M/C that wouldn't release properly. I replaced it with a USA made Wagner that I got from Joe's Antique Auto and no more problem.
