Another brake question: What's wrong: Hose or brake cylinders
OK, next piece of the brake puzzle. The hoses do not sit flush with the surface of the USA-made NAPA brake cylinders.
Which part is incorrect? The male hose end with 1/2" of nipple or the cylinder? See below. It was my dumb error. This is a rear one. Thanks, Tim Last edited by Tim Ayers; 04-14-2020 at 07:42 PM. |

Looks to me like your wheel cylinder is threaded 7/16 - 24 TPI , and hose end is threaded 7/16 - 20 TPI [UNF].

Tim, I'm going through similar angst whilst trying to do my hydraulic brake conversion...and now with everything in lockdown, the parts I need to complete the job have been sitting at USPS depot in NY since 4/1/20. [I'm in New Zealand]

Hi Brian:
Actually, this issue is my own dumb ass fault. The ones int the pict. are rears and I had them mixed up as fronts. Ugh. Fronts work and are deep enough for the hose. Good luck with your conversion. |

Re: Another brake question: What's wrong: Hose or brake cylinders
looks like the wheel cylinder has tube seats for double flair metal pipes ---I have learned to take apart all new and rebuilt wheel cylinders apart for cleaning and inspection, the brass sleeved ones many times are full of brass shavings, the new ones have problems like tube seats when not needed, bleeder passages not to the top, fill hole under cup and wrong size cups
tube seats can usually be removed by tapping and pulling out with screw---sometimes a sheet metal screw is enough |

My friend Zach Suhr gently pointed this out. Boy, I feel silly now. |

Re: Another brake question: What's wrong: Hose or brake cylinders
Hi,
Washers are required if the male to female brake connections are NOT by a flared connection (IFF to IFM). The slave cylinder you picture has a male flare so it is not surprising that you have a gap. I also recognize what you said about front and rear brake cylinders. IFF = “Inverted Flare Female” IFM = “Inverted Flare Male” Glenn |
