Plug jammed in tie rod end.
I was working on my tie rod ends today for final assembly. Everything has been taken apart, stripped, sandblasted, tapped, and painted. The rt. side went together with out any problem and the cotter pin will slip right in. But on the lt. side the end plug is tight but it's about 1/8" out from where the cotter pin goes in to lock it. any ideas? I'll be tearing it down to see what's up.

Re: Plug jammed in tie rod end.
Yes John, you have the plugs in backwards. Try swapping them around.

Re: Plug jammed in tie rod end.
The end plugs are all the same, but the plug cups are different and I believe it is possible to place the wrong length in first which will make the end plug not seat all the way.

One supplier catalogs shows an exploded view of the internals. There's a difference in the cups back inside it. There was a pic here once---Search "DRAG LINK" "Maybe" you have some DRAG LINK part in the TIE ROD end?????---"SEEMS" I remember that you sometimes have a SHALLOW cup leftover????--"Maybe" it's IN that end & won't let the plug screw in fully??? Re: Plug jammed in tie rod end.
Plugs should be fine. If you are using steer eye kit the steering arm draped link plug may be different to accept the end cup teflon.
I suggest you take out the steering arm from the tie rod end and try out just rhecolug. I suspect you have a thread issue. If so you may best be served by using another tie rod end. Must if the time the problem. Is in the end as they get bashed and the get tight. Make sure you plug ends are fitting properly and all you insert cups steel or teflon whatever you are using All the best Larry Shepard |

Re: Plug jammed in tie rod end.
Thanks for the input guys. I'll take it apart tonight and see what's up. I'm using the original style of hardware.

Re: Plug jammed in tie rod end.
I bought a set to rebuild my rods from Snyder and found this same problem. It was suggested to me that Snyders springs maybe were too stiff. My mentor looked at the cups and said all was right. I took the new out and put the old springs in and they worked fine???

Re: Plug jammed in tie rod end.
I found, when taking apart a recently rebuilt tie rod to scavenge parts for mine, that the plugs in the recently rebuilt tie rod had a 1/8" shoulder on the leading edge before the threads began. Not only that, the new springs were 1/8" longer than the original parts in the old tie rod. I had the same problem with not being able to put all the parts together. I used the old springs and plugs and all was well. The original plugs had no shoulder, the threads went right to the end...
