6 volt or 12 volt conversion

1950 ford with a good 6 volt system its time to replace my battery but ive ben thinking about a conversion to 12 volts for better lights and alternator charging system I know its not that hard to do with the reducers for the gauges good idea or bad need some input

After putting a 6volt alternator on my 51, I see no need to go 12 volts. The lights are much better and my overdrive never fails to kick in.

Usually with six volts if ALL of your Connections and Grounds are good you wont have any problems.{good conections,Proper size wire}

If it's already running fine on 6V no need to change to 12V.

I have one of each and if you have good connections and wires it really isn't worth the investment ,unless you plan on adding alot of 12 volt accessories.

I rewired my '49 6 years ago, but left it 6 volt. Everything works perfectly.

Mine is 6 volt and works fine.

Mine has been 6 volt for 72 years . I haven't owned that long but I am old enough. I have replaced headlight wiring and ample grounds wires. Never been a problem

my 6volt system works 100 percent I have the big cables like suggested the only reason for the 12 volt conversion is for brighter tail and stop lights if you use hand signals now days people think your waving at them

Good connections, heavy cabling, a 1 wire alternator and a Brakelighter stop light in rear window make my 6 volt system function just fine for me!!!! Have a 12 volt neg. grd. radio mounted in glove box but it is wired thru an inverter - works fine.

I have 12 volt now. I'll never go back to 6.

Can we STOP the myth that 12V systems give you "BRIGHTER" lights. IF both 6V and 12V systems are working "PROPERLY" they will BOTH have bright lights!!! Face the facts, the MAIN reason that auto manufactures went to 12V systems was "ECONOMY", half the diameter wire required per car, same selling price=PROFIT.
