'29 Roadster Pickup Bed Rails
Hi all,
My father and I have started working on our '29 Roadster pickup. One of the things we'd like to do is add bed rails. He'd like to make the rails himself, so he's using oak he picked up from one of the warehouse stores. It looks fine so far, except the stakes that fit into the bed pockets look too small. Does anyone have the correct measurements for how thick those stakes should be? I'm saying that they should fill the pocket, but he wants to use the thinner pieces he already has. Any advice can be considered family therapy. Thanks, Nick |

If it helps, the stake pockets on my '28 are 1 7/8 X 1 1/8

Using some of the stock he already has, and have him rip some "shims" to glue onto the stake stock he was planning to use to make the stakes the correct size.

Re: '29 Roadster Pickup Bed Rails
I just finished a 34pu rack. My bed had several different obstacles in the pockets so I had to use a router to cut a slot in each bottom end to clear a bolt head etc. The verticle stakes were made slightly smaller than the pocket opening and if you look closely at the pic, you will see a SS lag with a washer under the head to pull the stake in tight. My bed already had holes on the outside which I used. The lag bolts could be inside for that matter. I did that so I could tie something off if I was hauling it. Also, I don't like rattles so that stiffened the bed considerably. I laged the verticle stakes before I took measurements for the side rails.
I also had to inset the end rails behind the cab to prevent rubbing as they were too close otherwise. Of course, I counter sunk all inside holes so the SS bolts didn't stick out and catch on anything. |
