Default FoMoCo Octane Compensator

Hello --

Was this popular or even a thing here in the US? I couldn't find any information in the web about it. Ford Motor Octane Compensator, made by FoMoCo in Argentina probably late 40's early 50's. Curious to know as i've two of them.

Brochure in Spanish:

Translation to English:

OCTANE COMPENSATOR FORD
MADE IN ARGENTINA

INSTALLATION

Make a 6½ mm hole in the exhaust manifold and make the thread with a 7.9 mm (5/16") conical tap, common thread. The compensator valve is placed in the threaded hole in the exhaust manifold, from which the two copper pipes: one already connected to the flange that must be placed between the carburetor and the intake manifold neck, and the other that also starts from the compensator valve, goes to the air filter, whose cover must be pierced with a 5 mm wick, enlarging it by means of a punch so that it forms an inward funnel, then proceeding to screw it with a 3.2 mm (1/8") tap for gas.
Once the elbow is placed on the air filter cover, the engine should be adjusted, it being preferable for better performance to leave it a little accelerated. Regarding the adjustment of the distributor, it is recommended to travel 3 to 5 kilometers, accelerate the engine fully in "second" and set the advance –within the limits indicated in the service manuals– at a point where “knocking” does not occur.
It is advisable to give the points a clearance of 0.3 to 0.4 millimeters (.012 to .015") and the spark plugs of 0.6 to 0.7 mm (.025").

FUNCTIONING

The suction force of the intake and the pressure of the exhaust gas cause a regulated amount of exhaust gas to flow through the copper tubes, a part of which mixes with the air entering the carburetor. adding carbon monoxide and humidity from the environment to it, thus avoiding the detonation of the fuel, while the second tube takes heat from the exhaust to intercept the pulverized gasoline sent by the carburetor, gasifying it instantly.

MAINTENANCE

To keep the Ford octane regulator in perfect working order and to obtain highly satisfactory results, it is only necessary that each time the vehicle is lubricated or when the engine oil is changed, the screw on the back of the regulator is removed. the valve, air is applied from a compressor to remove any soot that may be inside, then passing through the hole opposite the screw (hole that carries heat to the base of the carburetor) the needle that is supplied with each device and reapply compressed air. Replace the screw.

ADVANTAGES
The "Ford" octane compensator valuable aid represents a valuable aid for engine carburetion by allowing full use of fuel, contributing to carburetion being as good as if high octane gasoline were used, and consequently increasing power and pique, without the presence of the annoying and harmful engine "knocking” or “piston slap”.

Sounds like an EGR valve.

It does sound like egr. Chrysler did the same on some 318 engines in the late 70's. They just drilled and tapped a hole into the exhaust crossover for a jet insert. That COMPENSATOR is a pretty cool part.

Thanks. Yes, I’m planning to restore the part and install it and see how it performs.
