Just read about this upcoming auction on the AACA Forum, have any of you Model A guys seen the collection? Sure looks like some fine cars are in there. I'm going to double my Lotto ticket buying this month.

He had a '31 AA Paddy Wagon originally used by the Chicago Police Department.

The vehicles, probably, will not go for a bargin price, but, I bet the smaller collectibles will.
It's actually good that a hoard, like this, will be broken up and will be owned by owners, who will restore them and put them back on the road.

Great question, we could start another thread guessing what the total take will be on the collection sale. It is one mans lifetime collection of parts and vehicles he loved, so they were priceless to him.

Sadly, most of the cars are in less than ideal shape. They have spent the past 3(?) decades in an unheated pole barn type enclosure with a dirt/crushed stone floor. Every few years the place would flood and the water would be up over the running boards on some of them. If you look, you see that a lot of the cars appear to be low in the back and high in the front; that is because they have sunk into the ground.

However, there is still some amazing stuff there. There are rumors of him having trailers full of parts. He once told me he has a property in Wisconsin that had 40+ pre-war Indians and dozens of Model T's.

Another rumor is that the entire collection could have been bought while he was living for an easy million. I don't think he'd ever do that. His wife and daughter both died years ago and the museum was not only his thing but it was also a way to get people to come visit him. He had a story for every single thing he had and could tell you where he got it from. You asked "do you have xyz..." he'd wander over to the other side of the barn and sure enough, there it was.

Was truly an amazing collection. I guess it still is.

It is most definitely suburbs. I believe the museum is located on his family's farm land that was slowly annexed away by the town or village.

I wonder if his ashes are in that box at the very begining of this video. If it were me, and I had a collection like that, I'd have my ashes put in a blower and spread all over everything.lol. Yep, buy my stuff and you have to take a little bit of me along for the ride.

Everyday that I wake up there is more information coming to light.

Hemmings' Blog posted a short story which included the attached picture; a sign that stood at the entrance to the museum listing the cars on display.

So, whilst drinking my morning coffee, I went through and typed out all of the cars, 81 total including 39 Model A's. There are still a bunch of little things that I can't make out, those are mainly the motorcycles and bikes. Also; these are only the cars/trucks inside the building. He has a lot more scattered elsewhere.

Hey Tim, thanks for working up that list I was trying to do the same thing. I wonder if that Veritas was the car they begged him to display at Pebble Beach? Looks like it would be a ton of work just to get one car out of there.

I have known Lee for over forty years. His collection is amazing and will make for an interesting auction! I know there are 3 Model A bodies in excellent condition as my brother looked at them a couple of weeks ago. Bring Money it will not go cheap but it will be a great auction,

If they hold it on his property, there is really no where to park the bidders (as I anticipate a lot of them). They could bring the cars outside and sit them out there but not sure how that will work too well.

The AA Paddy Wagon is what I'm interested in and it is way in the back. So if they do sell in the order they pull things out, it will be one of the last.

he told me that leno offered him a cool mill for the twin grill lincoln...or maybe it was boston blackies car.. but anyway. leno said he would hire a helicopter to lift it out of its slumber palce and patch the roof. he told leno to piss off that you would have the car but he would have a leaking roof.

Just wondering are there lots of Model A parts in the collection or just vehicles? Might be a place to find the special brackets I need for the top of my April 1929 Business Coupe, the ones that the short center bow attach to that allow for the oval windows. I can't make the auction or Hershey this year but would glady reinburse a Fordbarner for the cost of the brackets plus a nice finders fee!

Well it sounds like Jay Leno or someone of simular caliber will probably pay close to 1 million for the twin-grilled Lincoln. The Varities seems like it would be pretty rare also. I'm going to guess 2.9 million.

My original quesiton however is what this 'museum' would have sold for BEFORE the auction, if someone could have purchased it whole. I think the auction will bring a little more than just a big group deal. So does anyone know if this estate is being handled by family or laywers or??? Whould there have been someone or an individual to whom someone could have made an offer, OR is this auction part of the will? Just curious. I too think it is too bad that it can't stay as a group, although there will be a LOT of happy people as a result of the auction.

He told me in 2009(ish) that he would sell the whole collection for $1mil. I'm going to guess the Jay Leno story is exactly that. Selling for a million might very well be one of those stories. He had some good tales.

Roadster62 , there was alot of show cases filled with goodies and if you look at some of the cars they were filled too with stuff. I would like to know if he collected such things as Owner Manuals , tools and tool bags ,, and hope Model "A' people get a chance to buy and Study some of the cars... Might open up to some questions with the answers we are looking for...Did i hear right , there's a 1932 roadster in there with 1400 miles???Still like the paddy wagon! Wonder if the red and blue headlights flash back and forth???Would be neat back then! Just to add something ,,,Wonder if he collected keys????

That PATTY Wagon most likely will go on tour as part of Chicago Mob History, and join the Bonnie & Clyde Death Car, and every Mercedes Adolf broke wind in. I'm half Irish so I'd like to correct the Police Wagon spelling. It is PATTY, short for Pat or Patrick. The term goes back to the Civil War Draft Riots in 1863 when many Irish imigrants were hauled away in them.

Tomato/Tomoto. Here on the Southside of Chicago we Southside Irish call them Paddy Wagons. After all, Padraig is Gaelic for Patrick, so it can work both ways. Most of the PD's out here call them Paddy Wagons as well even the modern Ford and Chevy versions.

I go off the belief that they are so named because Police Dept's back then were predominately Irish.

Maybe it be best if we just refer to them like Ford did in late '31, Police Patrols.

Yes.

It should be noted that the wagon in the Hartung collection is not an actual Ford Police Patrol. It is a bus body that was made into a wagon by someone (CPD?).

Thanks for the update and illustrations WTSHUN. That says something about Chicago, even then they needed a bus over a standard Patrol. Tim, thank you for the math lesson, most guys don't add the cost of food & motel and loss of pay to the price of items bought at Hershey. I'd guess that is 15%+ on every item bought.

I'm wondering how they are going to sell the vehicles, are they going to move them out so they can be inspected or are they going to be sold as is where everything is so close not sure of how good a look you are going to get. The motorcycles I'm sure they will move, but don't know about the cars.

That's interesting, good catch. It does look like a flat face cowl with a wider than police patrol body doesn't it? Wonder if it's actually a police unit or just something that was done up for a parade car way back when?

Here are two other pictures showing a little bit more detail (or at least what can be seen).

Few things that point out this isn't a Police Patrol...
The flat firewall.
No cowl lights.
The back edge of the door curves towards the front of the car, the Police Patrols had a vertical line.

Also, the "M" license plate on the vehicle is incorrect. "M" plates started being used to signify "Municipal" plates in IL back in 1939/1940. From 1929 until 1939 "M" plates were used to signify the smallest weight class of trucks.

Still pretty cool looking though!

Boy, until that last picture, I wasn't all that concerned about the flooding up above the running boards thing, but that doesn't look too good to me. Anything can be fixed or replaced, but it is a shame that a neat collection like this had to sit in water. I wonder for how long? Anyone know? Those two running boards are pretty rusty. I saw it on one of the motercycles also about 1/2 way up the tire/wheel. Interesting, thanks for the post.

Most everything police related on that car is not original CPD. The "Police Alarm" on the door is off the side of a building.

My avatar pic is of CPD taking deliver of 1929 Phaetons. The vehicles were void of any excessive decoration. They typically had CPD or Police on the hood, a number on the doors and a number on the roof.

Here is a 20's era CPD wagon as well. This one has the bell in front of the radiator, the first and only time I've seen a picture like that. Most other ones had a bell on the passenger running board.

I was told to "Keep Out" so I video outside the new Chain-link fence with both Iphone and my new Nikon D5000 digital video to archive this historic event.

You can see in the first video a shot of Wayne Carini looking over one of the cars. So, you know it has to have some impressive stuff.

Here, someone goes around talking to various workers at the site interviewing them about working there...not all that terribly interesting but if you watch the background you can see a lot of the stuff.

As you can see, it is a AA Bus that has bars added to the side windows. It is NOT an original 285-A or 290-A Police Patrol as manufactured by Ford in '31. Still pretty cool to see though.

That is a lot of crap! Funny to me though, the five very specific items I want from that collection don't appear in any of those pictures. The auction "newspaper" they were handing out at Hershey was saying there will be over 2,000 lots. The guy running the auction said in an interview they are "shooting for 2,500" lots.

Still a ton of stuff to be brought out to the light of day.

Essex was basically a Hudson on a more economical scale. Hudson engineers were very good at what they did and the Essex shares from this same gene-pool.

Based on the pictures, I not sure exactly what parts you feel like it will need but consider the fact that 1932 was about the last year for the Essex, ....and there is no Berts, Snyders, Brattons, etc. for reproduction Essex parts. When you own an orphan car, you generally are forced to "restore" what is there instead of 'replace' parts.

Hi Gentlemen, I've seen some of your questions and comments here and joined so I could possibly shed some light. I visited this "museum" several times and he does have quite a conglomeration of stuff. My Dad was an avid Model A restorer and afficionado and I took him there several times along with his two brothers whenever they came to visit. I do live nearby the museum and 1 poster did have it correct that it is just a huge pole barn with no insulation or floor. He would never part with anything by the piece. My Dad asked everytime he went if he would sell a car part, wrench, tool etc, but would never budge. He did tell the Jay Leno story several times and my impression was that he wasn't a fan. Just from my impression and what Mr. Hartung would say while we visited, it sounded to me like he would never sell the "collection" in one lot. As for parking it will be interesting to see what they do for that. The link above is a clip from WGN TV that had showcased the collection/auction and the items they showed did not appear to be in the polebarn where these items were originally. So it looked like they may have moved some of the stuff to another location? There is no campground nearby. There truly is a little of everything. No one mentioned anywhere either that he did have an extensive police badge collection as well. That's actually how I first met him when he would take the collection to local police departments when they would have open houses (I worked at a local PD and saw the collection firsthand). I hope some of this answered some looming questions, and I wish my Dad was still alive to see the auction and be a part of it....he would have loved it.

Wow - this guy's been collecting a loooooong time. My husband Ken Ehrenhofer and John Krenger are going to this - I don't think I will ever comment again about how much stuff my husband has in his 6000 sq. ft. barn again - he will never have this much stuff.

Wow.Wow.Wow.

I had set aside 2 hours to see the auction preview yesterday. 5.5 hours later I was walking out of the place and still didn't get to see everything I wanted to.

RM/Auctions America did a lot of work on the property to get it to the point where they are able to start auctioning stuff off. I spoke to one rep who has been on site for the past 8 weeks and another guy who has been there since June.

The old museum has been emptied out and all of the stuff that at one point was buried and hidden and unknown, is out on tables, to touch and play with.



A lot of vehicles were outside.

1st issue.





I registered to bid at 6pm last night and was bidder number 238, so there will be a lot of people there. They have 1,700 lots that will be auctioned off. They were still auction people running around putting lot numbers on items all day. A lot list was available around noon and runs about 20 pages front and back.

Overall it was an impressive amount of stuff that will be hard pressed to find such a collection in the future. I'll be at the auction these next three days, more as an observer than a bidder, I'm sure things will go for crazy prices. Will be interesting to see how it all goes. The one item I had wanted and the main reason I've been so excited about this auction is not up for bid, it was kept by the heir as it had been a present she had bought for Mr. Hartung and she wanted to keep it. Can't fault her for that.

Oh, and I'm sure people were wondering but the one guy with the auction company we were talking to told us the auction company is estimating $8 million total sales. The property is for sale at $4 million. Not bad for a junk collector who lived in a trailer.

The City of Chicago started issuing license plates in 1903 or so, before IL did, after IL started doing License Plates the city started requiring vehicles to register and pay a tax, a small medallion was provided which was to be affixed to the dashboard of the vehicle.

A 1918 from my collection. Only about an inch and a half long.

I have about 40 of them but Hartung had an almost complete run of City of Chicago vehicle tax tags, including many types that I have never seen anywhere else.

Here are some of them in License plate frames at the Hartung auction.



He had the only 1931 City of Chicago Truck Tax tag that I have ever seen and I would like it very much for my '31 Truck. I have a '27, '28 and a couple '30s but no '31.



Here is a '30 out of my collection.

So I'll have to wait hope to find one at some point.

The auction was an experience. I got to see a lot of very cool things that I have never seen before, even after wandering Hershey four times. Saw and met a lot of great people, heard some great stories as well.

I only bought a pair of 1915 IL license plates on Friday, I overpaid for them but eh, would have been disappointed if I didn't get something out of the auction.

Overall, well worth the price of admission and a great collection that will now be spread all around the world for others to enjoy.

Ok my take on the auction is this very large lots made it hard to swallow when the price gets to 500 bucks or better for Model a Sector shafts. Well the lot is for 10 NOS in the Ford boxes and that makes them 50 bucks each. So what does the same copy but the Chinese in your catalog cost 70 bucks . Will it brake/snap, wear out in a week and even fit with out hour of mods. Most of the parts were original and NOS so quality cost were Chinese is cheaper but. A few pictures of the lots, I also took more and posted a few days ago. thanks lee for saving the cars and parts for us.

Actually it is a Union City School bus and was made in Union City Indiana.
Greenfield Village has one just like it and they give rides in it. I am missing the visor and the rear wrap around bumper.
I hope to show pictures soon I got her home on a roll back truck and it was really tall scary driving down the road.
Lee's Faher was acop and he always liked to fix up cars like squad cars so I am sure this was his sense of humor.
The rear wheels are frozen as they were in 10 inches of mud and water most of the time. Soon hope to apply heat and get her rolling. I will keep you posted,

This bus appears to have the mirrors on the interior window posts. Also notice the "window" on the lower part of the passenger door to allow the driver to see down.

Yes the bus in Greenfield Village is exactly the same. That is the visor we need and also the rear bumper altho I have two rear bumper brackets that do not look the same as the ones pictured. Mine are shorter ?????? also I need to see what the seats look like???? We do not have any!
One of many on the long list of questions. My inspiration is to go to a National Meet and go driving around with a bunch of people in the bus! Thsi will be really fun!

Yes this is the bus (not a paddy wagon) I have found out that Lee's father was a police man and that must be why he had such a penchant to dress up like a cop. He also dressed up this bus.
It is a Union city bus and I do not know where to look for a ID plate??
Where is it??? yes 157" wheel base. I have a friends AA fire truck 131 wheelbase in the barn and I thought it looked big until we off loaded this bus and now it looks really small. I willsend you an e-mail for the pictures

I do not have the mirors either interesting.....mmmmmm I do have the window it was blocked bythe police bell mounted on the door. I removed it for the trip home as I was afraid of the weight on the door causing damage. How did you get this repair photo?? I need to amke atrip to the village this winter. Always a great trip and I will need to get into the shop area to measure the seats and all.

Sorry, I don't know where or if there is a Union City data plate. Other buses I have seen have had the Wayne body. My understanding is that the Ford sold bus was on an AA157 chassis and was manufactured by Union City. So, at some point I would like to do an article for the Double A'er newsletter on this Ford identified 330-A body type. I don't know what the Union City body type was.

I took a pretty good look and cannot find a Union City tag anywhere. I do see the interior widow trim is woodgrained and there is a mirror between each window. I cannot imagine them wood graing a school bus???? So was this another kind of bus???? maybe a motor coach of some kind with flashy interior (woodgrain) So many questions and so few answers but the search is already great fun. Pieces of headliner still inside. First task is to wash the bus and do a video recording of the whole thing and all the details and then lot and lots of stiill photos. Altho I need to free up the rusted brakes and get it rolling so I can get it outside to wash and take pictures. Right now I know I need a visor, rear bumper, side view mirrors, seats, and lots of money to do this restoration, So far the wife is happy and so am I as I do not think it has sunk in yet. I would love to do an article on the bus so lets talk,

I know little about the 330-A. But, according to the "Ford Trucks Since 1905" there were both a school and passenger bus. The original was a school bus. The raised roof (like yours) was a modification to allow it to become a passenger bus.

thanks Ken I may have to do that--after I'm done down here in FL trying to get rid of all my dad's junk. (most of it's junk---he was like Lee, but collected stuff that didn't make sense to anyone but him. old chains, buckets of nails, all his old bricklaying stuff) Lee was a character alright!

in the meantime i have to figure out best prices for a small IL plate collection. I have 56, 57, 58 sets of two for one number, a set of 1940 in beautiful condition, 29 in also beautiful condition, a set of 57 in semi good condition, and 6 other random singles from 56-60, a stray semi good 1976 bicentennial and then a collector set of two 1976 USA plates----I need to find prices, but have been having trouble finding them.

On the way home I realized that a couple of items were still on the bus or laying inside and I did not want to loose track of them so early the next morning I went back and removed the police bell on the door and found the lighted CHICAGO sign that Lee had put on the roof. I was not sure how the door would survive with the bell on it because I do not know if the bus ever was run with the bell on it. So it was removed for the trip home. One of the auction folks who was trying to reach an upper shelf in the barn tried to stand on the roof and broke a few of the wood bows.... luckily no one was hurt but we built a 2x4 support inside and added to the 4x4's they already had put in so the trip home would not damage it further.
So it was then tarped (rain threatening) stretch wrapped and flat bedded home. When home we used car dollies under the two rear wheels as they are frozen because of ten inches of mud and water over the years.the back of the barn flooded regularly.
I have saved the police bell and actually rang it. A little WD40 and a six volt battery and it gongs real cool.
The Chicago sign really got me as I am a real Chicagoan born and raised in this great city and even have given "Tours of Chicago" to people from all over the world. The sign will hang in my shop and I got to figure out how to lit it once again.
This experience has been wonderful as I won the bid a cheering section from Model Aers went up from the back row. I was so nervous as I never bought anything at auction before..... and I always new Lee had this bus but I never thought I would ever own it.... It is really cool and really, really big. No It is REALLY BIG!
I have it stored next to a Model A Fire truck and it makes the truck look small. I am already receiving help from people in doing research and learning more about the bus. It appears it is not a school bus but rather a passenger bus with woodgrain interior and mirrors on each window. The big roof gave head room for the adults.
I can't wait to get into it but other projects have to come first. I am trying to get two vehicles done for Osh Kosh and Marquette so the bus will just have to wait.....

No Plans for the bell other than to hang it up in the shop. It was not a police paddy wagon as advertised and when restored it will be returned to it's bus look. Greenfield Village has the exact same bus so I am looking forward to trip there again.

I have a good friend, Frank Smith who collects an deals in licensce plates.
If you want his info let me know as he can advise you of prices etc. He might also be interested in buying some of them.

Don't know if he would have any Alaska plates, but I would be interested in a '31 Alaska plate, either Pass or Comm.

ebay is best for prices. I've bought all my plates there.

Just as an FYI, I saw that the April 17th episode of Chasing Classic Cars on the Velocity channel will be dedicated to the Hartung auction. The teaser shows Wayne Carini wandering the Hartung museum before it was dismantled and then shows a lot of him wandering the grounds with all the stuff laid out for viewing and then of course bidding.
