A good price?
There's a guy that I know that is selling his 1956 Ford Fairlane fordor Victoria. It's a beautiful car but he is asking $22,500 for it. He added the continental kit on it too. I think it's a bit too high though. What do you think?

Re: A good price?
In todays market I'd say it was on the high side. Without seeing it and being able to look at the detail things that seperate the men from the also rans it is hard to put a value on the piece, then add in the fact it is a moredoor reducing the audiance in my opinion it is about twice what it should be for a starting point. But as has ben said in the past.....you can ask what ever you like and there is always someone that gets their fire lit up out there somewhere....

Just to compare: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/cto/3228821390.html and http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/3260229484.html and http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/3278786843.html and since we are not in the "rust belt? Looks like a plane ticket and you could drive them home.

Re: A good price?
If this is a four door VICTORIA (hardtop and no pillars) I would say that it is worth a lot more than a two door Victoria because of the rarity. These four door hardtops were pretty rare in their day.

Re: A good price?
If it is a Fairlane sedan like mine pictured here and if it is in very good condition, it is only worth about $8000 according to KBB. But those are not Victoria's
Ford did make a fordor Victoria hardtop. That is a VERY rare car and it would be worth much more than 8K. |

Re: A good price?
The sad part of our hobby is, you can take a 12,000 dollar car, spend 30,000 more for a perfect restoration, and end up with a 12,500 dollar car.

Re: A good price?
What I don't understand though is people are spending BIG money on these hot rods and the prices on original cars are sinking. In my mind, that just means these old originals can be bought for cheap and made into hot rods. Just my thought on it. I have nothing against hot rods but when you take a perfectly good original car and make it a hot rod that bothers me!

Re: A good price?
Shows like Barrett-Jackson are ruining the hobby. All those millionaries paying way too much for a car just drives the price up for what should be a affordable car. Esp. all those Ch^%$ys.

Re: A good price?
The Crown Vic 4d HT is indeed a rare car but only worth about 1/2 what a 2dr HT does according to here: http://collectorcarmarket.com/menus/.../56fofane.html
It's hard to really say what the real world prices are. It's basically worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

Re: A good price?
It is strange what you remember from your youth; A friend's Dad bought a new '56 4 dr Victoria when we were teenagers. What I remember most about it was how badly the doors rattled.

Re: A good price?
the question is if this car is a hardtop it would be worth a lot more than a sedan. I have a friend that just did a 4dr. hardtop and it wasn't cheap we're talking over 50 grand to do a frame off.

I understand what you're saying, BUT, that doesn't always mean that the car will be worth that much when completed. You can spend lots of money on a pig, but all you end up with is a good lookin pig.

Re: A good price?
In general the pecking order in classic car prices starts with Open cars (convertibles) at the top, then 2 door Hardtops, then 4 door hardtops (phaetons), then 2 door post (Sedans) and lastly 4 door post (Sedans). Specialty cars like Glasstops, Businessman Coupes, Convertible Skyliners, and Station Wagons go up and down and have their own niche market. For example Station Wagons have recently gone way up in value, whereas a few years ago one could not give them away (except a real Woody of course). Rarity is not the same as desirability. Options can dramatically affect price as well. If a car is in cherry condition and it is desirable and it is rare and it is well optioned then it costs a lot of money. Of special note are survivor cars (no restoration at all). Survivor cars are very desirable mostly in reaction to over-restored cars like one sees on Barrett-Jackson. No mass-produced car ever came off the line like some of those cars.
As the gentleman said: it is a good time to buy. However, even though prices are way down one rarely, if ever, makes money on classic cars. The best value is a fully restored car unless you do most of a restoration yourself or you buy a driver and keep it that way. Hope that helps a bit. |
