Default 1983 Mercury Capri--

I have a 1983 Mercury Capri, with dual exhausts, 5.0, and a five speed. I want to put on a deep mellow muffler. Any ideas? Thanks

I thought my OEM 88 5.0 Mustang's exhaust sounded nice. I don't know if they are being reproduced. Being stainless, they were still on the car when I sold it with 188,000 miles.

You might also consider Borla XS mufflers. They are a straight-through design, quieter than Magnaflow's, and have received good reviews. You will find numerous examples on Youtube.

I'm pretty sure 1985 was the first year for a true dual-exhaust system for the 5.0 Mustang, and the last year for a carburetor. If your car has true dual exhausts, they're aftermarket. Moe than likely, unless you live in California, the cats were removed when the dual exhausts were installed. My car was 100% original, with the original 4 cats. No doubt it would have been louder, had the cats been removed.

You might get more responses if you post on a Mustang forum.

Edward: I have three mustangs, ranging from a stock 289 to a punched out Hi-Po 289 to a Hi-Po 302, all with dual exhaust. I run Flomaster Stage II on all of them; I like the mellow tone with a little rumble - stand on them, and there is a definite bark. I also have a F-150 with a highly massaged 5.4, with a Hooker Exhaust Extraction System (they make one for cars, also) ..... A nice deep rumble with a super growl at WOT. Hope this helps!

Hopefully, Flowmasters have improved. All that I've heard, with the exception of cat-back systems, sound like marbles rattling around inside of a can. I don't care for the metallic sound.

My sister has a 2004 Mustang Gt and had her exhaust replaced with a Boria system when it rusted through. A bit louder than the stock system but it sounds good. She's no spring chicken and told me some of her friends commented it was "loud". Said she just grinned and hit the gas.

I have Flotech Afterburner's on my warmed over 289 in a '65 Falcon . Good quality, fully welded style muffler w/a great deep sound, that is just the right amount of loudness when I stand on it . Nice '60s muscle car sound! - F F
