Default Notch for Starter Motor

I recall seeing a post somewhere about putting a notch in the Magnetor Backing Plate to enable a starter motor to be fitted. Like the one on the left of the photo at about 9 o'clock. Has anyone done this - and how did you do it? Power tool? Hand tool?

Thanks

A grinder might work. It would be prudent to remove the coils nearest the work.

Just remember, that notch is for the shaft and the Bendix has to be removed to take the starter off.
