36 spider hub caps
I was looking through the for sale section and came across an ad for 1936 spider hub caps. I have never seen these before, but I kind of like them . I have 36 artillery wheels on my '30 coupe and I think these might look good on it. my questions are 1- is 36 the only year these were available? 2- are they for 16" wheels only , or do they come in different sizes ? 3- are they being reproduced by an aftermarket source ? 4- how rare are they and are they always expensive when you find some in good condition ? I would want excellent condition or N.O.S. to be interested in any.--Thanks for any help anyone can give, I do not know enough about the 32-40 cars and trucks to know what to expect to pay for these.-----Jim

Re: 36 spider hub caps
Bill Hirsch makes a nice repop for $200 @, That's what I have on my 36. Found on ebay still in the wrapper at a deal a few years back. I believe that they were available for all years with artillery wheels though the year models were slightly
different. Concave V8 or convex V8 stamping depending on the year. Gotta have the trim rings too! Check my avatar. |

Re: 36 spider hub caps
Jim, I also have Hirsch caps and (unknown) trim rings on my '36 Phaeton. They're slightly tricky to get on and off, but they sure add a lot of bling.
Funny story, a few years ago I was sure I had a bad speedo cable but removing it didn't help. It turned out it was a lose left front spider cap making the same whooshing noise. PS. Just checked and mine are 'innines.'

Re: 36 spider hub caps
Jim, there are three different versions of the spyder hubcap for the wide five wheels. In 1936, the V8 was stamped inward, 1937 the V8 was stamped outward and the 1938/39 version was different with a much "fatter" (for lack of a better word) face. Bill Hirsch only has the '38/'39's in his online catalog currently for $195 each. If you are looking for some '37's, I have a couple of sets I would turn loose of.

Re: 36 spider hub caps
well, they certainly are not giving them away, but not unreasonable either. I think they may look nice on my car, but am not sure I want to spend that much (plus shipping to Alaska ) and then decide I did not like them. that is the problem living up here. very little stuff to look at in person, to see if you like it. are all versions 16"? it does not say on Bill Hirsch's web site what size they are. V8fordman , I appreciate the offer, and will keep you in mind if I decide to purchase some. I kind of like the 36 style, but hard to be sure with out seeing them side by side. maybe I can get out to a good swap meet in the lower 48 states this coming year, and get a chance to see all 3 types in person. I will have to give this some thought. Thanks to you fellows who replied to my post, I appreciate it very much.----Jim

Re: 36 spider hub caps
Very Tangled, that is a very nice car, but it is way out of my price range. I would have to cash in my retirement to be able to afford that. I have always kind of dreamed of owning a car like that, but I am just "one of the poor boys" In the hobby, but I can appreciate those cars. I am originally from Pa. , and was born in Lancaster. my dad was military, so we traveled and moved around a lot. I have never been to any of the Hershey, or Carlisle ( sp? ) guess it is time to go visit the relatives. they live 15-20 minutes from Hershey.-----Jim
