1935/36 Ford pickup door lock
I am restoring a 1936 Ford pickup. My new door lock has a longer shaft than the old one. Question #1: Can I cut down the new one? Question #2: What is the hole at the end of the shaft used for? If I cut the shaft down, mine will end up without a hole.

Suggest you insert the new lock and mark the shaft for the needed length. The hole on the end can be used to insert a tool to guide the square shaft into the square hole. How about a photo of the cylinder faces. If your doing a restoration: Neither of the two cylinders, you have. appear to be period correct. The ignition and the door should share the same key.

Re: 1935/36 Ford pickup door lock
My experience with the '35 and later door locks, not the latch assembly, is that the replacements tend to be quite generic, fitting several makes and models. The door lock for my '39 Plym conv cpe is the same as my '36 Ford coupe. The replacement I bought for the Plym was 1/4" but longer, requiring it be cut down in length.
Looking at the replacement lock assembly, it appears to me that the shaft is much larger, in size than the original lock which appears to be 1/4" which would be normal.

Re: 1935/36 Ford pickup door lock
Have you test fitted the lock and shaft in the door?
In later years, Ford used the same shaft for most door locks, but had a cut line ground into the shaft so you knew where to cut the shaft to fit your vehicle. |
