53’ 239 Flathead Water Pump Mounts
Hello! I’m putting a 239 from a 53’ in a 38PU frame- my question is do I need custom motor mounts? Or could I replace the current water pumps with aftermarket ones? Thanks

Yes, you can swap to an earlier type water pump BUT, you have to pay attention to the fan belt/pulley configuration (wide belt/narrow belt) (single belt/dual belt) etc., etc.

Re: 53’ 239 Flathead Water Pump Mounts
8rt truck pumps are what you need BUT they are wide belts. You'll need to change the crank and generator pulley from the narrow belt car pump belt that you have on the '53 engine. I have an 8ba in my '39 p/u but I'm using narrow belt OCM Merc pumps instead of the wide belt 8rt pumps so I didn't have to change the crank and alternator pulley. The Merc pump mounting ear is higher than the truck pumps so they need a U shaped spacer to place the engine at the correct height on the rubber mounting biscuits. The OCM Merc pumps aren't repopped. I sent mine to Skip for rebuilding as well as a second set for spares but given Skip's quality/guarantee I'll probably never need them.

Re: 53’ 239 Flathead Water Pump Mounts
One other option is to fab some metal plate that bolts to the stock car pumps and then bends to horizontal to allow you to use stock rubber biscuit mounts. The PO of my '39 p/u did that but I removed them and went with the OCM pumps I referred to in my previous post. Sorry no longer have them or photos. Fabbing the plate to make the car pumps mount like a truck pump might be the easiest solution so you don't have to change pulleys or source Merc OCM pumps.

Re: 53’ 239 Flathead Water Pump Mounts
A question just popped into my mind; is it possible to replace the stock pulleys on the 8RT pumps with regular 8BA narrow-belt pulleys? It seems like if it would work it would solve a lot of problems. I think there might be clearance problems even if it would work. Anyone ever try it?

Re: 53’ 239 Flathead Water Pump Mounts
I have truck pumps with narrow pulleys that were pressed on. My engine is an EAB from a Car. Previous owner wasn't concerned about the Car pumps not having mounting ears, he had the oil pan resting on the tie rod for support.
Pulling the pulleys off is a real chore without some special plates and a good press. Very easy to bend or break the pulleys, or overheat the pump seals.

The pictured engine has a '53 truck front mount and possibly a wide belt truck pulley. A better frontal picture would help clarify.

Tater,
V 8 Bob is seeing what I'm seeing....use the truck pumps with the ears and wide belt pulleys. Hopefully your motor does have a wide crank pulley on it...if not they are easy to source or call me. What ever you do hang on to the horse collar mount on the motor now. I think it is a one year only thing and has value. You'll be happier using the '39 gen with the wide belt pulley and fan mount. Re: 53’ 239 Flathead Water Pump Mounts
attached is a pix oi a 8BA engine in a '37 pickup using truck pumps and the '49-50 Merc U shaped mount extensions...
The bolt holes on the 49-50 Merc and truck pumps won't line up with the stock EFV8 mounts, the bolt holes in the Merc U shaped adapters are offset, two bolts are required, one through the frame mount, another through the U and water pump.

Looks exactly like the 8ba with Merc OCM pumps that I have in my '39 p/u. I'm no expert on Merc's but at one point I had an early Merc that had wide belts and used more of a square spacer instead of the U shaped spacers like the ones in the photo. At one point Mac Van Pet posted some info on Merc pumps on a different thread.

Re: 53’ 239 Flathead Water Pump Mounts
I just did it. Well, two months ago. And I’ve done it before as many folks have.
I got water pumps from C&G for a ‘51 F1 pickup and installed them on a ‘53 8BA engine and set it in a ‘46 Mercury. Same as you would do on a ‘38. That will give you ‘38 the wide belt option so you can use the original generator. Only other option is make brackets to fit the 8ba car water pumps to you ‘38 chassis. |
